How is it that the deficit expanded exponentially with each and every republican president since Reagan and shrunk under democrats? Only when the Republicans have sold every last star and stripe to the highest bidder will you people realize that fascism has it's cold ugly grip on YOUR once somewhat respectable and proud party.

“You’ll never know”, thanks for the witty and creative post. A thousand steps up from the average Comcast blog post. I don’t blame Republicans for wanting to try something different than what they’ve had in Washington, but Christine O’Donnell is the cherry on top of the ridiculous tea cake. If we hadn’t lived through Sarah Palin, you could have just put her or O’Donnell’s comments and commercials in an SNL sketch or a film and they would’ve been seen as crossing the line from brilliant satire into absurdity. Honestly, women’s groups would have been up in arms at the way female candidates were being portrayed if those two were fictional characters, and they would be justified in their reaction. From Sharron Engle to the chicken lady to the wrestling doyenne to the Arizona governor who freezes up over false visions of headless bodies, to Palin and O’Donnell and beyond, the only thing worse for the legacy of women in politics would be for any of these cartoons to get into national office. There have been women in politics I haven’t agreed with, but at least I could acknowledge their sanity, their seriousness, their adequacy to handle such a job.
It’s an interesting path to fame and fortune, don’t you think? Get a major party nomination in a national race, be the biggest idiot out there, get lampooned not only by the serious media but by satirical pop culture, and suddenly you’re a household name who can make a few hundred grand if not millions writing books, giving paid speeches, traveling the country and appearing on more TV than even a media wh0re like O’Donnell has done in her whole life. Sad thing is THIS is the BEST the Republican Party can come up with now that they have purged themselves of any respectable moderate candidates who are sensible, rational and willing to negotiate with anybody from the other side of the aisle. If people like this win, America loses because there will be even more gridlock than ever before and absolutely nothing will get done in Washington.

I think that most of the people in America are like me – somewhere in the middle and sick of it. I want my party back. Candidates like O’Donnell, DeMint, Sharon Angle and Rand Paul are just plain scary. They are so out there they would call Barry Goldwater a liberal. I am getting really tired of listening to the revisionist history being spouted by our president. Supposedly the Republicans "drove the car into the ditch." However, the Democrats assumed the mantle of power on Jan. 3, 2007 after sweeping both the House and Senate.

When the Democrats took over, the Dow was near 13,000, GDP growth was 3.5 percent, unemployment was 4.6 percent and the deficit $164 billion. Comparing that with the present situation makes me yearn for the good old days of Republican control.
The president’s rhetoric indicates that not only do we have a huge deficit economically, but there is a gigantic deficit in integrity. I guess it’s just Chicago politics as usual.

I wonder if there is any journalistic integrity left in Olympia. The above letter, full of lies and half lies, was run two days ago in The Olympian. In the classic milking of the cow style, the editors saw fit to leave this piece of human waste in the online edition for multiple days to squeeze a few more hits to hustle the advertisers and further inflame the political divide.

A letter to the editor is meant to be an opinion piece, but if the opinion of the letter writer was "the Publisher is a pedophile because I know he visited an elementary school", I'd think that said letter would never make publication. The above letter ranks in that quality, but since it just creates inflammatory rhetoric from both sides, I guess it's OK for The Olympian's staff to make as much hay as possible.

Let's start with "However, the Democrats assumed the mantle of power on Jan. 3, 2007 after sweeping both the House and Senate." This statement is false. In January of 2007, the Senate was made up of 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and two independents - one leaning to the Dems, one kissing Bush's cheek (Lieberman). This awarded Vice President Dick Cheney the deciding vote for the remaining two years of the Bush Administration. However, since this is a letter to the editor, we need not be factual or accurate. I'm preparing my next LTE based on my opinion of a former blog and why it was tossed by the editors.

As to the stock market, GDP and unemployment in January of 2007, any attempt to blame the September 2008 crash on the Democrats, falls right back in the truth that the Senate was controlled by the GOP. Any child with a calculator knows that you can't spend billions of dollars on war operations without taxation to pay for it. This is a proven historical fact and has been spoken by every credible economist alive.

No media has to publish every letter to the editor and I'll submit that plenty get the circular file treatment at The Olympian. This letter was an opportunity to fire up the community and get a few people a little more pissed off at each other. A look at the comments demonstrates a volume of policy violations and ignorance on the side of moderation because, after all, this shit sells advertising - or does it?

I've seen prosecutors ripped because of DUIs (as if they are different because of their jobs). I've seen council person's private lives and careers become part of "news" stories, regardless of the significance of such information on the story. Recently, a comment was deleted when a reader quizzed the possibility of disclosure of employment, if an Olympian employee was charged with a crime - similar to the harassing phone calls case. Translation: it's OK to out other people, but don't even consider talking about the home team.

The LTE was titillating and accomplished something The Olympian doesn't see much of - reader participation, but it was still a piece of human excrement. Or is it "Olympian politics as usual"?

Sharron Angle on Sharia Religious Law: It's Already Supplanting the Constitution

Attention Americans, especially you in Dearborn, Mich., and Frankford, Texas. Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle of Nevada is suggesting that Sharia, or Islamic religious law, is taking hold in your towns.

Angle made the suggestion at a rally last week in Mesquite in response to a man who asked about the proposed Islamic community center near ground zero in New York City and "Muslims taking over the U.S."

"We're talking about a militant terrorist situation, which I believe isn't a widespread thing, but it is enough that we need to address, and we have been addressing it," Angle said, according to The Mesquite Local News. "Dearborn, Mich., and Frankford, Texas, are on American soil, and under Constitutional law. Not Sharia law. And I don't know how that happened in the United States. It seems to me there is something fundamentally wrong with allowing a foreign system of law to even take hold in any municipality or government situation in our United States."

The Associated Press obtained a tape of the rally and a response from Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly, who called Angle's comments "shameful." He said they were based on distorted Tea Party accounts of the arrest of members of an anti-Islam group at an Arab festival.

"She took it as face value and maligned the city of Dearborn and I consider that totally irresponsible," O'Reilly told the AP. "If she wants to come here, I will take her on a tour. I will show her we follow the Constitution just as well as anyone else."

A Google search reveals plenty of accounts of the Dearborn festival arrests, which O'Reilly said stemmed from a Christian volunteer's complaints that she had been harassed. It's unclear why Angle mentioned Frankford.

Most Americans probably haven't noticed Sharia in their communities, but it came up at the Values Voter Summit of social conservatives last month in Washington. Newt Gingrich was among those warning of its encroachment. And, getting out ahead of the alleged threat, the Oklahoma legislature has passed a ballot measure to ban judges from using Sharia in reaching their decisions. Voters will decide its fate next month.

Would passing Initiative 1100 or 1105 really mean ten times as many stores selling hard liquor? That estimate comes from the state auditor.


Right now, you can only buy hard liquor from a state-run or contracted store and there are about 315 of them. The auditor estimated that if both liquor sales and distribution were privatized, the state could end up with as many as 3300 retail outlets selling hard liquor.  The initiative doesn't put a limit, though the auditor considers 3,300 is a high estimate.

Would we in fact have twice as many liquor stores per person as California? This statement is misleading.


If you take the auditor's high estimate of a possible 3,300 stores selling liquor and consider that our state's population is about 6.6 million, that's one store for every 2,000 residents.

In California, there are 13,321 stores selling hard liquor for a population of 37 million. That's one store for roughly 2,800 Californians.

So would we have twice as many stores per person? Hardly. So how do opponents do the math?

For this statistic, they ignored the auditor's estimate of 3,300 stores. They came up with their own estimate that 4,900 stores would want to sell hard liquor in our state.

Gene and Paulette Cranick, of South Fulton, Tennessee, US, lost their home after officers were ordered by bosses not to extinguish it.

Fire fighters only arrived when the flames spread to the property of a neighbour, who had paid the fee. However, they continued to refuse to help the Cranicks.

Later the same day, the couple's 44-year-old son was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, after allegedly punching the local fire chief.
Jeff Vowell, the city manager of South Fulton, said: "It's a regrettable situation any time something like this happens." Mr Vowell explained that there was no county-wide fire service and it was too expensive for the city's officers to serve surrounding rural areas like the Cranicks' as well.
Rural residents can gain access to the service by paying the annual fee. But "if they choose not to," Mr Vowell said, "we can't make them".
Mr Cranick said: "I thought they'd come out and put it out, even if you hadn't paid your $75, but I was wrong." His wife said the couple had offered to pay the fire fighters whatever was necessary for them to extinguish the flames, but the officers refused.
However they do not blame the officers themselves, she said. "They're doing what they are told to do. It's not their fault." The Mayor of South Fulton, David Crocker, told local reporters: "We're very sorry their house burned."

O'Donnell said China plotting to take over US

WASHINGTON — Republican Senate nominee Christine O'Donnell of Delaware said in a 2006 debate that China was plotting to take over America and claimed to have classified information about the country that she couldn't divulge.

O'Donnell's comments came as she and two other Republican candidates debated U.S. policy on China during Delaware's 2006 Senate primary, which O'Donnell ultimately lost.

She said China had a "carefully thought out and strategic plan to take over America" and accused one opponent of appeasement for suggesting that the two countries were economically dependent and should find a way to be allies.

"That doesn't work," she said. "There's much I want to say. I wish I wasn't privy to some of the classified information that I am privy to."

"A country that forces women to have abortions and mandates that you can only have one child and will not allow you the freedom to read the Bible, you think they can be our friend?" she asked. "We have to look at our history and realize that if they pretend to be our friend it's because they've got something up their sleeve."

O'Donnell's campaign didn't respond Monday to requests for comment.

At the debate, opponent Jan Ting countered that China has the potential to become a more Democratic country and an important ally.

"I think our China policy has to be handled very carefully," Ting said. "We have the capability of making an enemy or a friend out of China."

When Ting challenged O'Donnell's claim about having secret information, O'Donnell didn't answer specifically but suggested she had received it through nonprofit groups she worked with that frequently sent missionaries there.

I wonder if she shared any of this with George Bush and Dick Cheney as they were borrowing money from the Chinese.

Just how gullible are you? Of the many absurdities in the Republican Party’s “Pledge to America,” the most problematic may be the GOP’s vow to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act, colloquially called “Obamacare.” Not the most ridiculous, mind you. That would have to be the vow to reinstate the expiring Bush tax cuts at a 10-year cost of $4 trillion, slashing government spending to 2008 levels while balancing the federal budget.

Is there anybody capable of filling out Form 1040 EZ who buys this latest Republican fantasy? Alas, yes. A clamorous minority remains captive to the GOP’s decades-long War on Arithmetic. The more dramatically “conservative” economic dogma fails — there’s nothing conservative about believing in magic — the greater their cult-like need to believe it.

Obamacare’s problems, however, are somewhat of the White House’s own making. Polls have shown that while the law’s unpopular in the abstract, its constituent parts earn wide approval. That’s partly because GOP propaganda, “government takeover,” “death panels” etc., scared low-information voters; partly because the bill’s so complex that few really understand how it works.

That needn’t be an overwhelming obstacle. Few motorists know how their automobile works, but that doesn’t stop them from driving. The White House hoped that as Obamacare’s reforms took effect, public opinion would swing in its favor. Even people who succumb to dogma on an abstract issue like the federal budget often think more clearly about their personal well-being.

Anyway, regardless of how the 2010 elections go, there’s zero chance of Republicans winning a veto-proof two-third majority. Hence, repealing Obamacare can’t happen; it’s a meaningless promise. Furthermore, regardless of what you hear from FOX News and talk-radio blowhards, universal health insurance not only hasn’t “failed everywhere it’s been tried,” quite the opposite: No country that’s ever adopted it (basically every other advanced democracy in the world) has ever repealed it.

European conservatives don’t promise to abolish universal health care, but to manage it more efficiently. Hence the longer-term odds definitely favor the White House. Moreover, recent polls, along with the sheer incoherence of GOP rhetoric, make it look as if Republican monkeyshines could end up backfiring badly.

Here’s former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, one of four undeclared GOP presidential candidates on the FOX News payroll, holding forth on Obamacare at the recent Values Voter Summit. A recent Wall Street Journal poll showed that upwards of 89 percent of Americans favor requiring insurance companies to cover people with pre-existing medical conditions. Not Huckabee.

“How would you like to be able to call your insurance agent for your car and say ‘I want you to insure my car,’” he said. “‘Well tell me about your car.’ ‘Well it was a pretty nice vehicle until my 16-year-old boy wrecked it yesterday. (He) totaled the thing out but I’d like to get it insurance so we can get it replaced.’
“Now how much would a policy cost if it covered everything? About as much as it’s gonna cost for health care in this country.”

Ha ha ha! News accounts say the audience of evangelical conservatives ate it up. To hell with sick people; they’re defective. Off to the junkyard with them.

Now as Arkansas’ governor, Huckabee presided over a generous expansion of Medicaid coverage for children, and the taxes to pay for it. He’s not inhumane, just too glib for his own good.

Indeed, a recent New York Times/CBS News poll found that only 19 percent of the public would support repealing Obamacare if the “pre-existing conditions” clause went with it. That’s partly because although you’d never know it from watching television, much of the discontent with the law comes from liberals. Another survey by Stanford University and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation documents that roughly four in 10 respondents dislike Obamacare because it doesn’t go far enough. They’d presumably have preferred the government-run insurance option rejected by Blue Dog Democrats.

Therein lies the trap Republicans have set for themselves. How DO we pay for fairer, more secure coverage so that people who experience misfortune don’t end up forced to choose between health care and bankruptcy?

Obamacare does it through an insurance mandate to vastly expand the risk pool. Twenty GOP state attorneys general have filed a federal lawsuit calling that unconstitutional on the basis of a bogus libertarian argument that people can’t be penalized for choosing NOT to participate in interstate commerce.

But this is childish. Courts have ruled repeatedly that people have no constitutional right to refuse appropriate medical treatment. It’s a public-health issue. Given the option of affordable insurance, such people aren’t principled individualists. They’re deadbeats, expecting the rest of us to fund hospitals, then sticking us with the bill should their gamble fail.

That doesn’t mean the Roberts court might not buy it. But it definitely means there are no magical solutions; in practice, then, no Republican solutions at all.

Keating said Murray, one of Boeing's most influential benefactors in Congress, early on advised the company to contest the Air Force's decision, something the aerospace giant hadn't done with a federal contract in three decades. Murray also kept after the tanker issue on the Senate floor, in hearings and in letters to Pentagon and administration officials.

Radec is still trying to make me into the liar that she is.  I'm not banned from The Olympian.  I've posted several times in the past week, but radec doesn't know who I am and is pissing her panties about it.  I get more out of commenting on ThurstonBlog where the censors can't touch me because I'm me.  Hell, it gets as much, if not more readership, according to our statistical tracking.

Insulting fellow commenters?  Who is taking "Cedar" and spelling it backwards to harass a commenter?  Badgering the staff?  When my copyright is violated, you damned right I badgered them and when they are too damned stupid to just honor the copyright and want to argue about it, I publicly obliged the argument.

Now, let's deal with the facts.  Patty Murray was elected 11/92 and sworn in 1/93.  In 11/94, the GOP took over the Senate majority and held said majority until 2007, when the Democratic majority was sworn in.  Thus, as my letter to the editor said, for 2/3 of Patty Murray's service, she has been in the minority.  If radec can prove that wrong, I'd love to see it.  In fact, I'd love to see radec write a letter to the editor and have to publisher her real name.

The lastest ads in the Dino Rossi campaign would have you believe that Patty Murray is responsible for all that is wrong with our country.

Let's examine the facts.

Murray took office in January 1993. In November 1994 came the Republican takeover, which means they were sworn into office in January 1995.

In November 2008, the Democrats were voted in as majority of the Senate and sworn in in January 2009. (From 2007 to 2009 the Senate was a deadlock with Dick Cheney casting the tie-breaker.)

Rossi's ads talk about "Patty Murray's 18 years" but neglect to mention that during her 18 years in the Senate, the Republicans were in control two-thirds of the time.

Tell the truth, Dino. It won't get you votes, but it might save your soul.
