"Anymore" and "the future" is about one hour.There are some things that are consistant no matter where you go.  I've found that The News Tribune has it's share of Right Wing Screamers who love to engage and hate to be engaged.  They start shit on the boards and when they get a response they don't like, they run to mommy and when mommy doesn't fight their battles for them they way they want, they cry on the forum.

Wiggins takes lead in WA Supreme Court race

Charlie Wiggins has taken the lead over incumbent Justice Richard Sanders in the race for state Supreme Court.

Wiggins led by 3,517 votes Tuesday afternoon following an update from the state's most populous county, King. Wiggins holds 50.1 percent of the vote, compared to Sanders' 49.9 percent.

Sanders, who is seeking his fourth term, had led the race since election night, but his lead had dwindled to less than 4,000 votes by Monday night.

Wiggins is being helped by a big majority in King County, which posted 45,000 votes Tuesday.

Wiggins leads there by a 58 percent to 41 percent margin. A handful of other counties were set to update totals as well Tuesday.

WASHINGTON – Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell says banning pork-barrel projects known as "earmarks" from congressional legislation is more complicated than it appears but that he is willing to consider such a ban.
McConnell says that ending the common practice of slipping funding requests for home-state projects into legislation won't cut spending. A ban on earmarks will only limit the discretion of where to spend the vast federal budget and not curb spending.

From Slate - Matthew Kaminski had the bright idea of interviewing Rand Paul and Roy Blunt, two of the GOP's newest senators, back to back. If he was looking for evidence that the GOP establishment was ready to dismiss or co-opt Paul, he found it.

Mr. Blunt says Republicans are happy to embrace most tea party causes. He'd back a balanced budget amendment and endorses term limits—à la Rand Paul. And earmarks? Mr. Blunt pauses. "Rand doesn't agree with his dad on that. His dad is a leading advocate of earmarks on this side of the building. I'll let the Pauls work that out and then I'll see where they come down." We share a laugh over that.

Rand Paul won't stand for that, will he?

In a bigger shift from his campaign pledge to end earmarks, he tells me that they are a bad "symbol" of easy spending but that he will fight for Kentucky's share of earmarks and federal pork, as long as it's doled out transparently at the committee level and not parachuted in in the dead of night. "I will advocate for Kentucky's interests," he says.

However, asked if he would vote to extend the tax cuts without corresponding spending cuts, Paul said, "Absolutely. The money is not the government's. It is ours."

WASHINGTON — Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin on Monday weighed in on the global debate over the Federal Reserve's $600 billion plan to buy up government debt, suggesting Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke should "cease and desist."

"We shouldn't be playing around with inflation," Palin, who is widely seen as a prospective 2012 Republican presidential candidate, said in remarks prepared for a Monday speech in Phoenix.
"We don't want temporary, artificial economic growth bought at the expense of permanently higher inflation, which will erode the value of our incomes and our savings. We want a stable dollar combined with real economic reform. It's the only way we can get our economy back on the right track."
Excerpts of the remarks were published online by the conservative National Review magazine. Palin's staff was not immediately available for comment. The report said the remarks would be delivered in a keynote address at a trade association convention.

Now, those of us who have more than half a brain are aware that the only think Sarah Palin knows about inflation is helium balloons at a kids party.

Notice that "her staff" wasn't available for comment?  If this isn't a concocted piece of claptrap, I don't know what is.

He is not the 'community's #1 public safety employee', he is the City Manager and as part of his position as City Manager he is familiar with the function of the Chief of Police.

It’s the ultimate paradox – a celebrity agrees to appear with her entire family on a TV series, and then gripes that her life isn’t private enough.

Sarah Palin makes this complaint on the very show in which she has agreed to star: ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska,’ ...

... Palin crabs about a journalist ... who has taken up residence next door to her lakeside Alaska home in order to do “research” for a Palin biography. ...

“Our behavior has certainly changed this summer because of this new neighbor,” Palin says. “I think it is an intrusion, an invasion of our privacy and I don’t like it. . . . It’s just none of his flippin’ business.”

Adds husband Todd, “Our summer fun has kind of been taken away from us because of a new neighbor next door who is writing a hit piece on my wife. I mean life is about being productive but these people want to seek and destroy.”

Whether or not the Palins’ “summer fun” is curtailed remains debatable since the show itself is all about how much fun the family has in the wilds of Alaska ... On the other hand, the Palins have a point: There is a difference between being accosted by journalists when out in public, and having to endure a journalist who has moved next door for the express purpose of spying on you from an upstairs balcony. In addition, it’s valid to question this author’s methods. After all, thousands upon thousands of biographies have been researched and written successfully without their authors moving in next door to their subjects.

Still, the paradox is worth pondering every time a public figure who craves the limelight then turns around and complains that his or her privacy is being violated. Sure, you can blame the violator (in this case, the journalist), but doesn’t some of the responsibility lie with the publicity-seeker? Isn’t she the one who sought the limelight and brought her entire family with her?

Koster worrying about fraudulent vote counting

During the KIRO 6:00 pm broadcast, they reported on the Larsen/Koster vote count, with the implication that Koster thinks that there is a possibility of election fraud.  (As I remember it, the wording of the story on the KIRO site [below] isn't quite the same as in the report given during the newscast.)

Another Republican accusation-- if a Republican can't win, it's because the Democrats cheated during the vote count.  Let's all be grateful that Patty's vote results are enough greater than Dino's that he knew he had to concede.  :-)

Olberman suspended

“One week ago, on the night of Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, after a discussion with a friend about the state of politics in Arizona, I donated $2,400 each to the reelection campaigns of Democratic Representatives Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords,” Olbermann said. “I also donated the same amount to the campaign of Democratic Senatorial candidate Jack Conway in Kentucky.”
He went on to emphasize that he did not use his TV show to encourage anyone else to make the same donations. “I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level,” Olbermann’s statement said.

But Olbermann’s explanation was not enough to skirt the ethics rules at NBC News, and Griffin apparently had no choice but to suspend him, possibly leading to the dismissal of his network’s highest-rated personality, whose show, ‘Countdown with Keith Olbermann,’ at 8 p.m./7c, draws more than 950,000 viewers nightly.

So NBC suspends a commentator for donating to a campaign and FOX just donates millions.

It's looking like NBC is in the bag with the GOP now.  Who's next?  Maddow?

Spent a few hours this afternoon contacting a few of the THOUSANDS of people who weren't notified by the auditor that their ballots were rejected on technicalities.........so they could get that rectified. They have until the 20th. Most of the time it's simply folks who's signatures have changed over the years since they registered to vote.

Geez.....remember the good old says when people wanted public disclosure for intiative signers and Caetus:::cough::::SondraK:::::cough said it was a violation of privacy?

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News is declaring Sen. Patty Murray the winner of Washington's U.S. Senate race based on information from UW Professor Matt Barreto.

New vote totals posted by the Washington Secretary of State's office Thursday evening showed Murray leading Republican challenger Dino Rossi by about 50,000 votes.

As of 4:21 p.m. Thursday, Murray had 925,730 votes for 51.28 percent of votes tallied; Rossi had 879,362 votes for 48.72 percent of votes tallied.

Our Anniversary is coming.....

As most of you know, I monitor the activity of the blog.  Demographics is an interest of mine.  One of the categories in page views designates pages of interest.  There appears to be a substantial amount of interest in December 2, 2009 - the day I re-opened ThurstonBlog.

As most of you recall, that was a time when the LTEs on The Olympian were all together and the traffic was hot and heavy.  You'll also recall that was when PLUCK was the software and the Rightees had figured out that three clicks on the complaint link would cloak a comment.  There were many days that The Olympian shut down their thread, so I reinstituted ThurstonBlog as a forum.

I went back to try to recall what might be so interesting about that particular blog and found the one and only comment from "Chuck from Tacoma".  You all will remember Chuck as SondraK's "buddy".  Well...without further adu.....

I just got off the phone with my opponent and I reminded him that he is now in a position to help the people of Delaware who are suffering. I reminded him of Victor Rodriguez and Donald and his family and the many small business owners who are very concerned about these tax hikes. And if he does raise them on the top 2%, they’ll be forced to close their doors.
I asked him to watch that 30 minute commercial that we did so he can see what’s going on in Delaware the way I have. And I asked him if he would talk to you and if he would take up my promise to in this lame duck session fight the death tax from being reinstated this January 1st.
So hopefully he will.
And he’s gonna be up against his party leadership, but I asked him if he would sit down with some of the families who are very concerned about that and realize the difference he can make. So, we can only hope and pray that he chooses to go against his party leadership and do what’s right for the people of Delaware.

Republicans would control both Senate and House this Wednesday morning, were it not for Tea Bag wing nuts that cost the GOP at least two and possibly three seats in Congress' upper chamber.

The lesson, if Republican activists choose to accept it, is that similar extremism -- especially as espoused by a self-described "Mama Grizzly"" -- could cost Republicans the White House in 2012.

Is there any way Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid could have won re-election against any candidate other than Sharron Angle?

A veteran, not-very-popular politician found himself running against an opponent who wanted to abolish the U.S. Department of Education, and the EPA, described Social Security as "welfare," and said she saw no obligation to help bring jobs to a hurting Nevada.

The result, to borrow a term from the Battle of Gettysburg, was a "Bloody Angle." The issue became the challenger, although the incumbent Reid has been in the Senate for 24 years.

The Republicans seemed to have a lock on Vice President Joe Biden's old Delaware seat, with a popular moderate congressman and former governor. Christine O'Donnell changed all that, and began the mother of all TV spots by saying: "I am not a witch."

"Tonight, there's a tea party tidal wave," Kentucky Sen.-elect Rand Paul declared to cheers. He will be able to join Sens. Jim DeMint, Jim Inhofe, and Sen-elect Ron Johnson of Wisconsin in a caucus that might take its theme from Dragnet: Dum, de dum dum.

Look at who won Tuesday night. The Republicans' "freshman" Senators will be political veterans and insiders, men far more accustomed to the corridors of power than storming the barricades.

The night air across American rang out with partisan bluster: The Republicans' victory was not graceful. GOP National Chairman Michael Steele declared victory with mid-campaign nastiness, not a victor's magnanimity.

A few lonely voices seemed to recognize the need to govern, to work at solving the nation's problems.

"Divided government will give Republicans in Congress a chance to move beyond the extreme and partisan rhetoric of this campaign season and show they can work constructively towards real solutions to our energy security and environmental problems," said Republicans for Environmental Protection, a group active here. (It backed Kirk in Illinois and Rep. Dave Reichert in this state.)

Lotsa luck. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Republicans elected to the Senate Tuesday have a record of subservience to Big Oil and Big Coal, Roy Blount a case in point. Soon-to-be House leaders have drawn a line in the sand: No compromise.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said Republicans' chief goal the next two years is to win the presidency in 2012.

The GOP's failure to win the Senate points to a path to what it must avoid to reach that goal. Americans have reacted in 2010 to what they saw as Democrats' excess. They could just as well recoil at extremism of the right in 2012.

A serious note on today's election

I can't begin to say how glad I am to see Christine O'Donnell and Sharron Angle defeated.  It restored my faith in a few things:

1.  O'Donnell is a looney Conservative religionist that wants everyone to believe all the crazy crap she buys into.  Enjoy your religion, but leave me out of it.  There is no question in my mind that O'Donnell in office is a step in the direction of a Taliban in America.

2.  Angle's blatant racism, directed at Latino's was not, and should not have been rewarded.  Sadly, she polled well with white males (58%) and white females(51%) and those over the age of 55.  Let's face it, the whole SW America anti-latino movement is directed at this demographic.  They are successful for now in Arizona, where you have a high concentration of retirees, but as the younger demographic ages, the Latino base will grow.  Angle's campaign would have made the KKK proud.

3.  Neither of these candidates have a handle on federal office policy and couldn't handle the press, much less handle major decisions of national security that a Senator may face.  They were financed by the Republican money machine and were kept in the dark as much as possible - ala GWB.  Giving Karl Rove two Senate seats would be suicidal.

My faith in Americans, although shakey, is somewhat restored.

We have to note and remember this admission!

For the umpteenth time, I viewed Canadian Shona Holmes' alarmist anti-U.S. healthcare plan TV commercial and finally decided to check it out.  I found that typical of GOP-backed commercials, this one is chock-full of errors.  According to FactCheck.Org's "Dying on a Wait List?" (and other sites) in 2009, when the commercial was first shown, she had a cyst, not a tumor, and she was in NO danger of dying!  Under the Canadian healthcare system, she had appointments to have the problem taken care of, but she didn't want to wait that "long" and instead made a personal decision to come to the U.S. for treatment.  Afterwards, she started bashing the Canadian system and attempting to warn U.S. citizens against setting up a Canadian-style health system here.
According to Professor Larry Moran, "... To summarize, we have a patient with a non-life-threatening brain cyst who may or may not have had to wait a long time for treatment in Canada but choose to go to an American clinic where she was operated on after about a month. This patient is sufficiently opposed to Canada's health care system that she has collaborated with a right-wing group to sue the Government of Ontario for allegedly violating her rights. ..."

A personal report Sunday evening from an Internet friend who attended the Rally to Restore Sanity (reprinted with permission)....

“I will always vote !!  Always !!  Being in a sea of people yesterday on the National Mall showed me, I am not alone....  [The crowd included] like minded sane intelligent people.

They came from All over, most of the people we met were from NY though.  Took me 3.5 hours to get there, when it normally would take about 20 min.  Met so many people who were on their way but just gave up, the roads, trains, cabs, and buses were over capacity. I have never seen anything like it and I have been to many rallies and marches.

Some of the signs I saw that I liked were:

I still like Brett Farve
Speak softly and carry a small stick.
WE are the Green Tea Party [with little green teacups on it]

Great experience with my daughter even if we could not get near the stage or hear a thing.  Watched it on Comedy Central when we got home.”

Though Metro was in talks with Stewart's people about it, they ultimately decided to take a pass, perhaps because they didn't anticipate many more people than at Beck's rally. (Beck's people didn't pay for extra service, either.)

Transparency replaced by behind-doors secrecy.

Bipartisanship reduced to intimidation and non-presidential name calling and demonization of opponents.

Greater energy independence deceptively aborted by promise-killing restrictions.

Getting America’s economy back on track thwarted by excluding experienced business entrepreneurs from his administration and by refusing to implement policies to provide long-term certainty.

Belief in the spirit of individualism denied as he surrounds himself with a cadre of radicals — czars and advisers, some of whom have self-disclosed histories of being socialists, communists, Mao praisers, and advocates of eugenic elimination of the weak.

Rejection of lobbyists refuted by offering waivers and by giving plums to supporters — unions, etc.

Constitutional adherence supplanted by political chicanery and class warfare.

Our interests ignored, exemplified by jamming health care down out throats.

As the smoke clears and the mirrors steady, what are we to conclude? Though we would still like to believe in the message we heard, can we honestly continue to be blind to reality?

 American voters have gone insane.

At least that seemed to be the premise behind satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" held Saturday on the National Mall in Washington.

The two Comedy Central network talk-show hosts tried to play down any seriousness of their event before it had actually occurred. But the rally's title struck a chord with thousands who think there really is something crazy about the 2010 elections.

And yes, a lot of the wackiness can be traced to the ascension of the tea-party movement. But that doesn't mean tea-partyers are the only ones acting as if they need a dose of common sense.

On both sides of the Delaware River, Democratic candidates for Congress had to answer questions about their staffs trying to boost the campaigns of tea-party candidates in efforts to pull votes from a Republican.

While incumbent Rep. John Adler (D., N.J.) could at least deny knowing what his people were up to, State Rep. Bryan Lentz (D., Delaware) could not. He admitted his campaign helped tea-partyer Jim Schneller get enough petition signatures to get on the ballot.

It's hard to see how anyone who is thinking clearly could aid even a spoiler's bid for election to Congress by Schneller, who, quite frankly, comes across as someone who has yet to meet a conspiracy theory he didn't like.

Meanwhile, Adler's people resorted to that same insane desperation move as poll after poll showed him trailing Republican Jon Runyan, a former Eagles player who has shown no ability to actually represent constituents.

But, as a new face in politics, Runyan represents change. And two years after the Obama election, that's still what voters want. Polls suggest they don't care that the change they are being offered is more of the same old stuff.

Rather than offering new ideas, most Republican/tea-party candidates are promising to take America back to where it was pre-Obama. Their common refrain is that the health-care reform law must be repealed. That's crazy.

If anything, the law that will add more Americans to the ranks of the insured needs to be amended to do a better job of reducing health-care costs. But no repeal is required to accomplish that. Besides, any repeal would be vetoed by President Obama.

Republican/tea-party candidates don't seem to care about that. They just want to be able to say they're for repealing "Obamacare."


It's clear that they're preparing for a continuation of the partisan rancor that has kept Congress mired in politics, to the detriment of the public good. That doesn't make sense. But it doesn't mean voters won't buy it.

Media descriptions of the conservative movement's protests are incomplete without references to a Walmart's worth of wheelchairs and walkers amid a sea of gray heads. Surveys of tea party supporters have found that half are over age 55 and something like a third are 65 or older.

Why?

Many experts have suggested that the elders were motivated by fear that the Obama administration will cut their Social Security or Medicare payments. But new research into the roots of elders' political and cultural attitudes suggests there may be other factors at work as well.

The crowd was enormous – easily a quarter of a million people. As the masses listened to music and comedy routines broadcast from the tiny distant stage over giant screens all the way down the Mall, it was an impressive display of the power of comedy and celebrity. Whether it was a display of the power of American liberalism was much harder to say. Many observers saw the rally as a response to Fox News pundit Glenn Beck's recent "Restoring Honour" rally, which occupied the same space several months ago. That event, which attracted between 250,000 and 500,000 people, was seen as symbolising the rising power of conservatism.

... however you defined the Rally to Restore Sanity, there was no denying its scale. Trains, buses and planes in and out of Washington were all packed to the gills. There was barely a spare hotel room within 20 miles of the centre of Washington, or at least not one that wasn't going for several hundred dollars above its normal price. Satellite rallies and parties to watch the whole thing broadcast live on Comedy Central were held all across the country from New York to Washington in America's rainy Pacific north-west. At least six events were being held abroad.

... if there was one group the rally did take genuine aim at, it was the American media. That has long been the true aim of much – if not virtually all – of Colbert's and Stewart's comedy. They have relentlessly gone after the mainstream media, accusing it of laziness, elitism and pandering to power, and generally holding it responsible for a dumbing down of American life.
