Where are the jobs that were promised by GOP?

I know I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I feel I’m missing something here.
We’ve been told over and over by the GOP: “Don’t raise taxes on the rich. That’s where the jobs come from.” So, where are the promised jobs? I’m sure all those in the unemployment lines and their families would like to know.  I’d like to know.

Nothing could be further from the truth, Marcus.  The market crash of 2008 put the economy in a tailspin, people lost jobs and stopped spending money.  Washington runs on sales tax.  Do the math, stupid.

Michele Bachmann's new political consultant, Ed Rollins, criticized Sarah Palin for failing to be a "serious" candidate on the "Kilmeade and Friends" radio show Tuesday.

Over the recent Memorial Day weekend, my family and I had the privilege of driving through Lacey and Tumwater. Both cities proudly displayed our American flags from light posts throughout the cities.

Then to our dismay when we traveled through our own capital city, we found no such honor.

Could we please trade our rainbow flags for the good old American flag at least for Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day?

I expect a little more from our Olympia.

Except Ms. Edwards is wrong, so fundamentally wrong it should have set off the crap detector of any sort of editor with frontal lobes. There were American flags flying from every light pole on Capitol Way from the Capitol Campus to the Farmer's market. A quick call to Olympia public works would have confirmed the fact that Ms. Edwards is so full of shit her eyes are brown. But no, the Olympian ran this POS for reasons I speculate had to do with creating controversy to drive traffic to their on-line product.

The ensuing thread was Seinfeldian in that since the LTE was delusional and in the end about nothing, the comments reflected the same qualities. After an opening salvo of Liberal bating homophobia, glenn turned his negligible talents to Anthony Wiener and the Usual Wingers gleefully burbled on about Congressional underpants until the thread was shut down.

So I ask, if a modicum of reality is not necessary for an LTE, what can we expect in the future? Cure for cancer found in artesian well water. Olympian newspaper coven of baby eating Satanists. Tammy McGee a space alien?

What do USAA, CVS Caremark, Costco, UnitedHealth Group and Berkshire Hathaway all have in common?

They’re all multi-billion dollar American corporations that pay their fair share of taxes and don’t hide their money offshore. In fact, if you combined the federal tax receipts of just these five corporations, that accounts for more than $7 billion. Theoretically, that money paid for 175,000 teachers at $40,000 a year, or for the guaranteed healthcare for sick and injured 9/11 first responders outlined in the Zadroga bill.

Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. said “Taxes are the price we pay for civilized society.” Taxes have paid for everything from the interstate system to national parks, the moon landing and the liberation of France. In fact, Eisenhower, a Republican, presided over an era where corporate taxes accounted for a quarter of all federal tax receipts, and the richest Americans still enjoyed their wealth while paying a 90% top tax rate. Americans were never more prosperous as a whole than during that era. Now, loopholes and lobbying have lowered the top tax rate to its lowest point since the Truman era, and corporate tax dollars only count for 5-7% of all federal tax receipts.

After the Great Depression, our leaders had a vision for America. They fought to see ours was a country where everyone was afforded the opportunity for free basic education, an affordable home, a steady income and free healthcare for the poor and the elderly. FDR took to the airwaves in his last months of life to push for a second bill of rights that guaranteed all of these things and more. MLK called for an economic bill of rights to be drafted in 1967 that guaranteed Americans a fair standard of living.

Instead, the American people who pay taxes and abide by the laws put before us are seeing these essential pillars of American democratic society crumble to pieces. The same corporations who pay for the campaigns of our elected officials and own the mainstream media are instead allowed the opportunity to not only avoid paying their fair share to participate in society, but also to spend millions lobbying our leaders to continue avoiding their obligation.

We’re constantly bombarded by rhetoric about how businesses are “obligated” by their shareholders to avoid taxes at all costs. Talking heads on TV constantly deride America’s corporate tax rate, calling for it to be lowered so we can be more “competitive.” Yet, the aforementioned corporations paid close to, and in some cases more than America’s marginal 35% corporate tax rate. And each year, they continue to be extremely profitable without dodging taxes through offshore accounts.

What if today’s corporations abided by a more sustainable business culture, where taxes are seen as an investment in their country rather than something to avoid? What if those investments could pay for nationwide poverty relief? Or cross-country green energy infrastructure? If NASA had the money to carry out a Mars landing, instead of a moon landing? If we could guarantee high-quality free public education to ALL students, regardless of zip code.

If an American business wants to employ our workers, use our infrastructure, and depend on us to make them prosperous, they should be required to pay our taxes. Our leaders must reform our tax laws to reinforce that standard. Let’s hold government and businesses accountable to the American people — the real shareholders.

Initiative drives - Eyman style

While stopping at Fred Meyer in Tumwater during the holiday weekend, I was approached by signature collectors at the front door on Fred Meyer property.  They had three intiative petitions.

One was allegedly to "stop cruelty to animals".  One was allegedly to "make sure that people working with the elderly have background checks" and finally.....good old 1025 - the one with Eyman's name on it.

Being me.....I was more than happy to engage them and said "there is already a law about background checks" to which I was told "THEY are trying to stop it".  I asked "who is "THEY"?  Response - "The government".  My question - "which government"?  Response "The Governor!!!"

Now we all know (actually we all don't know) that the governor doesn't legislate.  Lie #1 on their part.

Cruelty to animals?  Already laws against it.

So.....what is really going on?  Possible fake petitions to collect signatures that will end up on 1025?  It wouldn't surprise me.  Since Sam Reed is a friend, you can bet that we'll be talking about this.

What I'm actually betting is that the other two petitions are actually about other issues but they use those "headlines" as the emotional ploy to get your attention.

Oh...by the way...when I asked too many questions, one of the collectors got hostile with me.  I told him not to talk to me like that and he said "I can talk to you any way I want, anywhere".  To which I said...."oh, freedom of speech, huh?  Well then....GO TO HELL!!!"  (LMAO)

Now...the interesting part.  Fred Meyer will not do anything about them other than give you a pre-printed post card to send to their corporate lawyers to tell them what you think.

I'm telling them with my dollars that I no longer spend at Fred Meyer stores.  Pretty damned stupid of them when Albertson's is right across the street and Costco is next door.  (by the way Costco has a great relationship with their union workers....unlike Fred)

Grim numbers for newspapers, magazines

Print publishers no doubt cringed Wednesday as the latest doomsday statistics about their industry were released.

U.S. newspaper advertising revenue fell 7 percent in the first quarter of 2011, according to the Newspaper Association of America, bringing sales revenue to its lowest point in nearly three decades. A 5 percent increase in online ad revenue for legacy print publications was not enough to offset the 11.4 percent decline on the print side of the ledger. Combined advertising revenue for the quarter was $5.6 billion, versus roughly $6 billion during the same period a year earlier. You can view a spreadsheet with the results here.

Still, the Newspaper Association strained to identify a silver lining in all the gloomy numbers, arguing that the industry's long-term transition to digital platforms is proceeding nicely.

"The strong growth in newspaper online ad revenues ... reinforces the continuing strength of our medium's digital transition," said NAA president and CEO John F. Sturm in a statement. "As newspaper websites and mobile applications continue to engage key demographics and attract nearly two-thirds of all Internet users ... newspaper advertising's digital component is poised to advance its share of the market.

Other observers aren't buying such sunny appraisals, however.

"Newspapers now appear to be entering the sixth year of an unprecedented collapse that has vaporized half of their principal revenues since 2006," writes industry analyst Alan D. Mutter. "Tumbling ad sales are reducing the resources and, thus, the time that publishers have to reinvent their franchises to meet the expectations of modern consumers and advertisers."

Magazines likewise got a bit of bad news today. A new report from research and data firm MagNet showed that overall newsstand sales for magazines in the first quarter of 2011 slid 6 percent, from $1.04 billion to $987 million.

Palin’s fundraising was no joke to MSNBC’s Martin Bashir, who bashed Palin on the NBC-owned news channel on Tuesday. He accused her of violating the rules for displaying and using the United States flag, saying she’s using it wrongly for “financial purposes.” (Watch the Bashir commentary here)

“She drapes herself in the stars and stripes and makes millions of dollars in the process,” Bashir scolded. “This [bus trip] has nothing to do with the presidency and everything to do with filling her pockets!” he declared.
