Can the United States Ever Be United Again?
By Joe Gandelman | May 10th, 2011
So much for our new era of national unity.
When Rep. Gabby Giffords was shot in Arizona, the pundits and political class predicted that it might be a turning point in political dialogue, ushering in a new era of civility. That lasted almost a week.
But that was comparatively impressive: the killing of mass murderer Osama bin Laden on Sunday May 1 sparked pronouncements from talking heads about Americans being united again in a cathartic event.
That lasted about a day. Or less.
[snipped]
In Conservative Talkland, hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage initially acknowledged and praised Obama’s role. But by Tuesday most conservative talk show hosts and callers were insinuating that the non-release of the bin Laden photos and changing White House accounts of the killing meant the government was lying, Obama staged it to boost his poll numbers and that congratulations really belonged to George Bush. Bin Laden’s timely exit became a mere side issue.
[snipped]
Sociologist Philip Slater argues that polarization is an international phenomenon involving a clash between “the control culture” and “the connecting culture.” In the U.S. profit spurs it on. Our 24/7 news cycle reaps millions for those generating and packaging partisan hate and controversy. Many cable networks only set up left and right debates and totally ignore the center. A Pew Research poll now finds independent voters free of party but not of ideology and less moderate.
Today, in news, talk shows and politics, if it bleeds it leads, if it’s rage it gets minutes or the front page. And if it divides it richly provides.
The lingering unity after World War II’s end or 911 would be elusive today. Weeks are down to days. Can the United States be unified again?
Yes. Despite arguments by some Republicans that Obama blew it by killing bin Laden an NBC poll found 80 percent agreeing with Obama’s decision and only 11 percent disagreeing. Two thirds agreed with Obama’s decision on the photos. The Daily Beast’s John Avlon notes demonizing conservative radio talk shows’ ratings are declining. Meanwhile, both political parties’ establishments seem more anxious to compromise than their zero-sum-take-all ideologue bases.
And that is hope you can believe in.

Political typology: where do you stand?

Beyond Red vs. Blue
2011 Pew Research Political Typology
The Pew Research Center’s Political Typology is a longstanding effort to sort Americans into cohesive groups based on their values, political beliefs and party affiliation. The 2011 Political Typology is the fifth study of its kind, following on previous typologies in 1987, 1994, 1999 and 2005. Like the previous studies, the new typology reveals substantial political and social differences within as well as across the two political parties. It also provides insights into the political and social values of independents, a growing segment of the American electorate, but one that is far from unified in terms of values and ideological beliefs.Take the quiz

Yes, let's all feel sorry for those poor, poor Christians. They have it so tough, this life is so very hard for them. Can you imagine the pain of waking every morning and realizing that there are people who choose *not* to worship Jesus Christ? That really hurts. Imagine the horror, the agony, the torture of not being able to force everyone around you to your particular views?
Those poor, persecuted Christians. You really do have a terrible life, don't you? Please, lie down. Do you want some water? How do you *ever* get through this difficult life? It's so difficult, don't even bother going to work, or getting out of bed. The pain of not living in an all-Christian world is just too great for such poor, pathetic, weak creatures as yourselves. How can you survive under such rough treatment?

Louisiana governor Jindal caught in birther flap
By Kathy Finn – Sat May 7, 8:24 pm ET
NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) – A photo of Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal's birth certificate was published by a newspaper on Saturday even though there is no doubt the Indian American Republican was born in the United States.
Jindal, who is not running for president in 2012 but is mentioned as a possible vice presidential running mate, released the certificate to prove a newspaper editorial wrong.

I'm going to give you a really honest answer, pdasroo. The answer is pretty much no, we don't have time to proofread. That's what happens when seven people are left doing the job that 49 did four years ago (seriously). I'll admit that comments like these hurt; it feels like being kicked when we're down. I understand that it's eternally fashionable to criticize the local paper as an institution -- I've worked for the Reeking Urinal, the Slimes, the Daily Zero and other papers with easily mocked names -- because institutions can be seen as having damaging agendas and no faces. But the few people left here are real, and we are trying as hard as we can.

Posted under the NRA logo at the NRA show in Pittsburg:

Notice how they purposefully delete the REASON for the RIGHT? It's kinda like reading a SondraK blog.
OK, "Deathers", is this enough for you?

Al-Qaeda confirms death
Dubai: The al-Qaeda on Friday confirmed the death of its chief Osama bin Laden, five days after he was killed by American commandos in Pakistan's Abbottabad town.
The confirmation came in a statement posted by the terror network on jihadist websites, according to the U.S. monitoring group SITE.
In the statement, al-Qaeda warned that bin Laden's blood would not be “wasted” and attacks on the U.S. and its allies would continue. The terror group described itself as a “curse” on America, vowed bloodshed and asked Pakistan to rise up in revolt. — PTI

President Obama a Moderate Republican?
This article by Ezra Klein has an interesting take on the Obama Presidency:
"America is mired in three wars. The past decade was the hottest on record. Unemployment remains stuck near 9 percent, and there’s a small, albeit real, possibility that the U.S. government will default on its debt. So what’s dominating the news? A reality-television star who can’t persuade anyone that his hair is real is alleging that the president of the United States was born in Kenya.
"Perhaps this is just the logical endpoint of two years spent arguing over what Barack Obama is — or isn’t. Muslim. Socialist. Marxist. Anti-colonialist. Racial healer. We’ve obsessed over every answer except the right one: President Obama, if you look closely at his positions, is a moderate Republican of the early 1990s. And the Republican Party he’s facing has abandoned many of its best ideas in its effort to oppose him."
The rest of the story contains some interesting historical perspective.

US House Republicans back away on Medicare overhaul

Boehner stands by GOP Medicare overhaul plan
By Lisa Mascaro
May 5, 2011, 10:26 a.m.
As congressional negotiators met with Vice President Biden to begin deficit-reduction talks Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner refused to back away from the Republican proposal to privatize Medicare and make other changes to the nation’s health entitlement programs.
Top Republican lawmakers have acknowledged that the party’s proposal to change Medicare for the next generation of seniors is unlikely to gain ground with President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate. But Boehner insisted Thursday that all options remained on the table as negotiations were underway on a budget strategy that could win bipartisan support alongside an increase in the nation’s $14.3-trillion debt limit.

Senate official: Wrong to link bin Laden, Geronimo
By MATTHEW DALY , 05.03.11, 07:22 PM EDT
WASHINGTON -- The staff director for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee is objecting to the U.S. military's use of the code name "Geronimo" for Osama Bin Laden during the raid that killed the al-Qaida leader.
Geronimo was an Apache leader in the 19th century who spent many years fighting the Mexican and U.S. armies until his capture in 1886.
The staff director and chief counsel for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, Loretta Tuell, says it is inappropriate to link whom she calls "one of the greatest Native American heroes" with one of the most hated enemies of the United States.
Tuell is a member of the Nez Perce tribe and grew on the tribe's reservation in Idaho. The Indian Affairs panel has scheduled a hearing Thursday on racial stereotypes of native people.
