Political Idiocy 101
Washington lawmakers shamefully drop the ball on student loans
July 2, 2013
Everyone in Washington — rocked-ribbed conservative, bleeding-heart liberal and in between — agreed: Student loan interest rates should not double overnight.
And everyone in Washington just watched Monday as rates on federally subsidized Stafford loans went, in the blink of an eye, from 3.4% to 6.8%, triggered by an automatic hike.
Never mind that college tuition has been rising at roughly double the rate of inflation. Or that student loan debt nationwide now tops $1 trillion. Or that the economy is still hurting, with many of the young people who are scraping to pay their debts also struggling to find work.
Somehow, your elected representatives watched a fat, slow pitch over the middle of the plate land in the catcher’s mitt for strike three. And the crowd booed.
