Panel Wants to End Ban on Church Political Work
By Laurie Goodstein, August 14, 2013
A commission of 14 evangelical Christian leaders has recommended that churches and other houses of worship be allowed to endorse political candidates without losing their tax-exempt status. Under a ban in place since 1954, tax-exempt religious organizations may endorse political causes and legislation, but not candidates. In a report issued on Wednesday, the Commission on Accountability and Policy for Religious Organizations said the ban inhibits free speech, is confusing and is enforced inconsistently by the Internal Revenue Service. A minority report written by some of the 66 religious leaders advising the commission disagreed and supported keeping the prohibition. The commission was convened by Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, initially to recommend ways to prevent financial corruption in religious ministries investigated for misusing donations.
