Dayton mayor sends Rubio biography of Wright Brothers
By Jack Torry, August 21, 2015
Prompted by Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio’s pronouncement that the Wright Brothers were from North Carolina, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley Friday sent the Florida senator a copy of David McCullough’s best-selling book, “The Wright Brothers.”
“The book is [a] national bestseller this summer,” said Whaley, a Democrat. “I’ve had mayors across the country tell me how great the book is. So you would think presidential contenders would at least know about…Dayton’s role in the invention of power flight.”
During a speech Thursday at the Detroit Economic Club, Rubio, a Florida senator, praised the innovation of the Wright Brothers for their first flight in 1903. But instead of pointing out they were [from] Dayton, Rubio described them as “two brothers from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.”
Not exactly. While the first flight – which lasted about 12 seconds -- took place in Kitty Hawk, the Wright Brothers lived most of their lives in Dayton. Wilbur was born in Millville, Ind., while Orville was born in Dayton.
