How to amplify ‘small money’ in politics
By John Diaz, June 6, 2014
My Sunday column looks at a proposal by Rep. John Sarbanes, D-Md., to counter the influence of big money in politics by amplifying the impact of small donations.
It’s hardly a cure-all for a system that has been greatly distorted by the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision, which opened the floodgates to big-money donations by corporations, labor unions and other monied interests. It will take a constitutional amendment to restore the ability of Americans to regulate money in their political system, but in the meantime Sarbanes’ HR 20 is well worth considering as a stopgap.
Here’s a video clip from his visit to our editorial board on June 3.
