Bill Maher wants Eric Cantor fight on the left
By Lucy McCalmont, June 14, 2014
Liberal comic Bill Maher said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s loss Tuesday would never happen to a Democrat— although he wishes it would.
“This could never happen on the left. I wish it could. I wish somebody would come along and say to [Massachusetts Sen.] Elizabeth Warren — who I happen to love — ‘You know what? You’re not left enough,’” Maher said Friday on his HBO program, “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
MSNBC’s Krystal Ball, a guest on the show, suggested the same could be said to Hillary Clinton.
“An even better example,” Maher replied.
Maher called Cantor’s primary loss to Dave Brat a “political earthquake,” saying Cantor was the tea party’s biggest ally in Congress. The late-night host nevertheless hit the Republican for his conservative approach to government spending.
“Eric, if you’re watching: Don’t think of it as being thrown out on your ass, think of it as making big government dependents go out and get a job,” Maher joked.
He later joked, “Even Eric Cantor has to admit, if you spend your life cutting programs that help children, you deserve to get beaten by a guy named Brat.”
