Governor Rick Perry’s Twitter account posted a picture of the Travis County district attorney with, among other things, the line, “I am the most drunk democrat in Texas.”
“What is most important for Governor Perry and his PR team now is how he, or they choose to respond,” said John Dankovchik, CEO of social media marketing firm Splash Media. “It is imperative to find out who is responsible, hold them accountable and place tighter controls on social accounts going forward.”
The Perry tweet quickly disappeared and the governor tweeted that he wasn’t responsible for the message and did not agree with it.
It’s a pattern that seems to repeat itself.
From Anthony Weiner and Christopher Lee’s career-ending, sexually charged social media posts to Dan Patrick’s big typo on gay marriage, the internet is littered with digitally damaged reputations.
Political analysts say the long list of politicians allowing the fails in the first place points to sloppy management of how all those social media devices are used.
“There are some things you do and some things you don’t do,” said political analyst Allen Saxe. “It’s called discipline! And you would think politicians of all political stripes would understand that.”
But there is a flip side to it. While we can use social media just about anywhere and at any time — and get it trouble with it — we’re also inundated by it. We see it all the time. And so something like Governor’s Perry tweet may not hurt him in context of the landslide of slip-ups social media users are accustomed to.
“It’s just like a lot of stuff we see on television now or in the movies,” Saxe said. “Initially it was shock value: ‘wow!’ and now? Let ‘er rip! And nobody will care what happens.
