Kim Davis’s Four-Word Review of Obama’s Speech
By Benjamin Landy, January 13, 2016
Kentucky County clerk Kim Davis, who became a conservative Christian icon after she was briefly jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, did not have much to say about President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address Tuesday night.
“It was a speech,” Davis told an Agence France-Presse reporter, before wandering away.
Davis attended the event at the invitation of House Freedom Caucus chairman Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican who offered up a ticket after his staff heard she was interested in attending, a spokesman for the congressman told CNN.
Approaching the pomp and circumstance of the president’s speech with the steely reserve and quiet stoicism that only time behind bars can bring, Davis applauded for just four lines, according to the Huffington Post. “God bless you, and God bless the United States of America,” ironically, was not one of them.
