Howie: 'Put God back in politics'
By David H. Montgomery, July 17, 2014

Independent U.S. Senate candidate Gordon Howie released a one-minute advertisement focused on a religious message Thursday.

Howie, who is running against Republican Mike Rounds, Democrat Rick Weiland and independent Larry Pressler for South Dakota's U.S. Senate seat, positions himself as "true conservative." In the first video of his campaign, Howie didn't talk about small government or gun rights. Instead, he focused on the role of religion in American life and politics.

"Here's the truth: the United States isn't going to solve its problems in a country empty of faith. And it sure won't solve them with a government that's hostile to faith," Howie says. "A great America needs God."

Here's the ad, which appears to be shot inside a church:

Most concretely, he repeats a call from his 2010 campaign: for pastors to discuss and endorse politicians from the pulpit.

It's unclear whether Howie, who's done very little fundraising, will be airing the ad on television or just online.

Here's the transcript of the ad:
Let's be honest. Our country isn't just facing a political crisis, we're facing a spiritual crisis. I'm Gordon Howie, and I'm running for U.S. Senate in South Dakota. I'm not afraid to say I'm a Christian, saved by Jesus Christ. But people of every faith have seen how religious values and even God himself have been under attack in America over the past few years. We've ended up with politicians who don't serve God and country, but who enrich themselves at our expense. I'm here to say, the corruption has got to stop. Here's the truth: the United States isn't going to solve its problems in a country empty of faith. And it sure won't solve them with a government that's hostile to faith. Politicians need to put God back in politics, and pastors need to start talking politics and endorsing candidates from the pulpit. I'm Gordon Howie, and I approved this message because a great America needs God.
