No, Bell, it has nothing to do with benefits! Read this: "A report from two major Republican groups found that women consider the party to be 'intolerant.'"

COMMENT: Yup, you just keep on going with that minority & female outreach program, GOP, and you'll be reduced to a footnote in history in no time. The book they'll write about you will be titled, "The Republicans: How a Powerful Political Party Went Crazy and Committed Suicide In Less Than 50 Years."

Senate Candidate: Women Only Vote Democrat Because They Are Dependent On Government Benefits
By Amelia Rosch, October 10, 2014

Jeff Bell, the Senate Republican candidate in New Jersey blamed single mothers for his poor polling among women, claiming that they are dependent on government benefits.

On Thursday, Bell told the Asbury Park Press that his lack of female support comes from the rise in single mothers in New Jersey who are “automatically Democratic because of the benefits.”

“They need benefits to survive, and so that kind of weds them to the Democratic Party,” he said.
Bell then suggested that popularity with male voters is a better sign, as men are “more willing to vote for change.”

“Even before the gender gap appeared, men were more willing to vote for change. They’re more bomb-throwers. Women are more cautious,” Bell said. “If you’re doing well among men, that is something that an insurgent candidate needs.”

But Bell’s unpopularity with female voters may have more to do with his radical anti-choice record. According to his website, Bell supports Rand Paul’s bill that would create fetal personhood; he also supports bans on abortion even in the case of rape or incest. Only 10 percent of New Jersey residents support a total ban on abortion.

Bell has also previously said that access to contraception has led to an increase in surgical abortions, even though several studies have shown that when women have access to birth control, abortion rates drop.

Bell’s suggestion that single mothers choose to vote Democratic because of “benefits” echoes comments that Mitt Romney made after he lost the 2012 presidential election. Less than two weeks after his loss, Romney said that Obama won because of “gifts” that the president promised groups, such as help with college loans for young voters or free contraception for women voters. Leading Republicans, including Wisconsin governor Scott Walker and Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, criticized Romney’s comments.

Throughout this election cycle, the Republican Party has struggled to reach female voters, especially unmarried ones. Unmarried women are more likely to support Democrats than Republicans; in 2012, 61 percent of unmarried women supported Obama, while 51 percent of married women voted for Romney. A report from two major Republican groups found that women consider the party to be “intolerant.”

Booker is currently leading Bell by 15 percent overall according to the latest polls; Booker is leading among women 56 to 33 percent and among men by 49 to 44 percent.
