Group uses 'that Mexican thing' to register Latino voters
By Erin Kelly, October 5, 2016

Mike Pence's now-famous debate line "you whipped out that Mexican thing again" is being used to help register Latino voters to cast ballots in the Nov. 8 presidential election.

The VL Action Network, formerly known as the Voto Latino Action Fund, announced Wednesday that it has launched www.thatmexicanthing.org, which sends viewers to the group's voter registration website.

Pence, who is Indiana's governor and Donald Trump's running mate, uttered the much-tweeted-about phrase after Hillary Clinton's running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, criticized Trump's controversial comments that some Mexican migrants are rapists and murderers who are "bringing crime" to the U.S.

"Senator, you whipped out that Mexican thing again," an annoyed Pence said to Kaine.

VL Action Network President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar said, "'That Mexican thing' that Governor Pence was referring to are the millions of Latino and immigrant families and their countless contributions to the fabric of this country."

"Donald Trump has made this election about us," she said. "And now it’s become about defining who is American. Latinos need to show up and represent, so we can change the conversation to make it about what counts — the issues."
