Republicans: Sharp rise in disapproval — poll
By Joel Connelly, October 7, 2013

Public disapproval of Republican in Congress has risen sharply during the first week of the federal government shutdown, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post national survey.

The poll, conducted Oct. 2-6, found that 70 percent of Americans disapprove of the Republicans’ performance, up from 63 percent just a week before.  The percentage of those who strongly disapprove of the GOP in Congress has spiked upward from 42 percent to 51 percent.

President Obama has seen an uptick in approval, as he has called on the Republican-run House of Representatives to pass a “clean” budget bill free of ideological requirements and efforts to de-fund the Affordable Care Act.

The President’s approval rating is up from 41 percent, a week ago, to 45 percent. Fifty one percent disapprove of the job Obama is doing.

The country is strongly polarized.  Eighty-nine percent of Democrats disapprove of Republicans on Capitol Hill, while 89 percent of Republicans disapprove of Obama’s performance.

Among Republicans, however, just 52 percent approve of the job being done by their party in Congress. But very conservative Republicans — the so-called “base” — approve by a 59-39 percent margin.

The ABC/Post poll of 1,005 adults involved interviews on both land line and cellular phones.  Its findings carry a margin of error of plus/minus 3.5 percent.
