Let’s lose the word ‘fight’ in our political rhetoric
By Anne W. Buckley, October 27, 2013

When tackling a complicated issue, the Brits often use the phrase, “Can we have a word, please?” and they step away from the controversy and sort out the problem.

We have a word issue in our country. None of our elected officials on a local, state or national level were sent to their jobs by the people to fight.

They were sent to legislate, negotiate and determine the best possible outcome for those whose interests they represent.

It’s appalling to hear the word fight repeated endlessly. We didn’t send elected officials to wage war; we asked them to do the people’s business. If issues don’t coincide with those opposing, there is no excuse to continue wrangling. Work it out!

The media can help by losing this word. It represents confrontation, and Lord knows we have enough of that. Eliminating fight from the political arena might result in resolution.
