The silly season of politics is upon us
By U-T San Diego Editorial Board, October 3, 2014
There are just 31 more days before the Nov. 4 elections. It’s the silly season and candidates, nervous if not desperate, are doing silly things.
Like San Diego City Council candidate Carol Kim, who staged a news conference this week to in essence denounce her opponent, Chris Cate, as a criminal. The basis for the allegation was that Cate was still receiving a yearly $75 discount on his property tax bill for a condo in Carlsbad that he once claimed as his primary residence and where he previously lived. Since the law requires candidates to live in the district they seek to serve, and Carlsbad obviously is not in the San Diego council’s 6th District, Cate must either be committing tax fraud or election fraud. That was Kim's argument.
Powerful stuff, eh? Not really. Turned out Cate had submitted a form to the county assessor’s office more than a year ago declaring his new residency in Mira Mesa, safely inside the council district. County officials noted the new address but failed to delete the discount. A top official in the assessor’s office acknowledged his office’s mistake and said Cate would not be fined. The candidate is not a crook.
Voters beware: It’s the silly season.
