Cruz, Hatch Trade Lessons on Civility After Ex-Im ‘Lie’ Flap
By Sylvia Wier, July 26, 2015
Sen. Orrin Hatch, president pro tempore, began Senate session by reading part of Rule 19, on Senate decorum, which prohibits senators from accusing each other of “conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a senator.”
- Hatch later took the floor to urge civility
- Sen. Ted Cruz, following Hatch, said “speaking the truth is entirely consistent with civility”
- Remarks came after Cruz on Friday said on the Senate floor McConnell told a “flat-out lie” about whether there was a deal in May with pro-trade Democrats to advance trade legislation in exchange for a later vote on the Ex-Im Bank
- NOTE: Senate to vote within hour on adding Ex-Im reauthorization to surface transportation bill vehicle, H.R. 22
- McConnell said in opening remarks there was no “special deal” needed for Ex-Im vote; Sen. John Cornyn said on Senate floor McConnell didn’t lie
