‘Normalize’ pedophilia? Limbaugh sees ‘movement’
Posted by  Joel Connelly, January 7, 2013

Rush Limbaugh lost millions of dollars worth of advertising in 2012 after describing as a “slut” and “prostitute” a Georgetown University law student who argued that contraception should be included in employers’ health plans — as indeed required by the Obama administration.

On Monday, the right wing’s mound of sound marched deeper into the realm of wretched excess.

Limbaugh charged that there is a movement afoot to “normalize” pedophilia and likened it to the gradual acceptance of same-sex marriage.  The allegation — supported by no evidence — came as Limbaugh discussed the Jimmy Savile sex-abuse scandal at the BBC in Great Britain and the Jerry Sandusky trial in the U.S.

“There is a movement to normalize pedophilia, and I guarantee you your reaction to that is probably much the same as when you first heard about gay marriage,” Limbaugh told listeners.  “What has happened to gay marriage?  It’s become normal, and in fact with certain people in certain demographics, it’s the most important issue in terms of who they vote for.”

“So don’t pooh-pooh.  There’s a movement to normalize pedophilia.  Don’t pooh-pooh it.  The people behind it are serious, and you know the left as well as I do.  They glom onto something and they don’t let go.”

What is the “movement?”  Limbaugh offered no evidence, other than an article in The Guardian suggesting that there is a suggestion in Canada to come up with a new definition for pedophiles.

Who are “the people behind it?”  Limbaugh did not say.  “The left” was as usual painted with a broad brush, although no “normalizers” of any stripe have been identified.

But Limbaugh claims powers to forecast the future, and enjoys the undeniable power to utter outrageous falsehoods — claiming the excuse of humor when called to account — and to scare elderly and gullible listeners.

“I just want to remind you now when you first heard about gay marriage — and I don’t want to pick on gays,” said Rush.  “It’s not what I’m saying.  It’s just something that was such a departure from the norms of the day.”

Limbaugh continues to depart from the norms of rational discourse.
