Political headlines turn weird: This week's top 3
By Paul Singer, October 16, 2014

This week's top political headlines turned a little wacky as the mid-term elections loom less than three weeks away. These jumped out:

• In Texas, Democrat Wendy Davis started a firestorm with a hard-hitting ad focusing on the fact that her opponent in the race for governor, Attorney General Greg Abbott, won a multi-million dollar damage award when he was struck by a tree that left him partially paralyzed. Davis contends in the ad that Abbott has since supported policies that make it harder for other people with disabilities to pursue similar damages, but Abbott disputes this, and most of the debate since the ad was released has been about whether she should have used his paralysis as the focus of an ad.

• In Oregon, Governor John Kitzhaber was considered an easy bet for re-election, but his race has been roiled over his fiancee's admission that in the 1990s she had accepted money to marry an immigrant so he could get a green card and she had been part of a scheme to start a marijuana farm. Though they are not yet married, Cylvia Hayes is treated as Oregon's first lady and also serves as an adviser to Kitzhaber, which has raised concerns about a conflict of interest because she also is a consultant to private clients.

A little fan that Democrat Charlie Crist brought to his debate with Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott has sucked all of the air out of the room, completely dominating discussion of their gubernatorial debate Wednesday night in a race that is too close to call.
