Joni, c'mon, "bread bags"? I also had one good pair of shoes, growing up in a neighboring state. But I always had inexpensive overshoes-- they were cheap enough that surely your parents could have gotten some for you?

COMMENT:  David T. You do not understand what is so funny about this ? Becasue it is a load of #$%$. And BTW, they had plastic shopping bags when Joni went to school, which were much more sturdy and would actually fit over shoes, whereas bread wrappers would be a very hard stretch and would tear before ever getting them over shoes, unless they were baby shoes. Bread wrappers make much better MITTENS.  SMH and you people vote for these mental midgets. Scary.

Sen. Joni Ernst's SOTU rebuttal sparks 'bread bag' meme
By Caitlyn Dickson, January 20, 2015

Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst touched on a variety of topics in the Republican rebuttal to President Obama’s State of the Union address. But it may be an anecdote about her modest upbringing that most Americans will remember.

“You see, growing up, I had only one good pair of shoes. So on rainy school days, my mom would slip plastic bread bags over them to keep them dry,” Ernst said. “But I was never embarrassed. Because the school bus would be filled with rows and rows of young Iowans with bread bags slipped over their feet.”

Ernst would go on to discuss a variety of issues, from international trade to terrorism to the Keystone Pipeline. But judging by the flood of responses on Twitter, she seems to have lost a lot of people at “bread bags.”
