GOP senator: No evidence Obama used IRS to target political enemies

There is no evidence President Obama used the Internal Revenue Service to target his political enemies, according to Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), a member of the GOP's Senate leadership team. 

"Presidents have always been very careful about maintaining the appearance of keeping hands off the IRS," Blunt told The New York Times. "I don't have any reason to believe there wasn't targeting of conservatives, but it might well have been a lot more than that as well."

The comments are a departure from earlier accusations from some Republicans that Obama was directly responsible for the IRS's targeting of conservative groups.

That shift has come after it became public that the IRS also targeted some liberal organizations for additional scrutiny, a fact that has dampened GOP enthusiasm somewhat for directly blaming the White House.
