Axelrod pokes fun at Palin floating an exit from GOP
By Seth McLaughlin, July 1, 2013

A former senior adviser to President Obama mocked ex-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Monday for dangling the idea over the weekend that she is open to ditching the GOP and launching a “Freedom Party.”

“With Palin threatening to bolt party, I bet a bunch of Rs are humming that old Dan Hicks tune: How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away?” David Axelrod said via Twitter.

Mrs. Palin raised the possibility of leaving the party after she was asked on Fox News whether she and Mark Levin, a conservative commentator, would be willing to build a “Freedom Party” if the GOP continues to ignore conservative principles.

“Well, I love the name of that party — the Freedom Party,” Mrs. Palin answered. “And if the GOP continues to back away from the planks in our platform, from the principles that built this party of Lincoln and of Reagan, then yeah.”

Mrs. Palin stormed onto the national scene when Arizona Sen. John McCan tapped her as his running mate in the 2008 presidential election. Following the election, Mrs. Palin returned to Alaska, where she faced ethics investigations and eventually quite her job in 2009, citing media and political attacks against her.

She has remained a favorite of some grassroots conservatives.
