'Shame on the Republicans': Congresswoman Blasts GOP for Dropping Food Stamps
Rep. Corinne Brown blasted Republicans for cutting food stamp portion of the farm bill

By Mary Noble, July 11, 2013

The House narrowly passed a farm bill after stripping out the portions funding food stamps and food banks. The 216-208 vote means that the House and Senate can talk about a final farm package. But it's a highly controversial move that is being criticized even by opponents of food stamp spending.

The conservative Club for Growth predicted that the food stamp funding will simply be restored in conference: "The new farm-only bill...likely will result in House and Senate negotiators restoring commodity and food stamp funding opposed by Republicans," the Washington Post reports.

Meanwhile some House Democrats were furious at the symbolic attack on food stamps.

"The Bible says, 'to whom much is given, much is required,'" intoned Democratic Rep. Corinne Brown, having gotten permission to speak on the House floor. "Shame on the Republicans. Shame on the House of Representatives."

The House spent some minutes debating whether Brown's remarks should be struck from the record, and Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD) stepped up to defend Brown.
