C'mon, Koch brothers-- here's your chance to participate in a “free and open debate”

Tom Steyer to Koch brothers: Bawk! Bawk! BAWK! BAWK!
By Lynn Bartels, May 23, 2014

Clever: Instead of a multi-paragraph press release, Tom Steyer’s NextGen Climate sent a 15-second video explaining what happened to their request to debate the Koch brothers.

The green billionaire apparently believes billionaires David and Charles Koch from the other side of the political spectrum are too chicken to debate him.

(Although the request for a debate reminds me of Colorado Christian University inviting Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper to debate the four Republicans trying to unseat him. “As if the governor were somehow expected to join a Republican debate,” as columnist Mike Littwin put it.)

NextGen Climate Action announced Thursday Steyer had donated $50 million and the group was raising another $50 million to target seven Democratic races nationwide. One of them is the U.S. Senate battle in Colorado between Democratic Sen. Mark Udall and Republican Congressman Cory Gardner.

The Koch brothers have funded conservative causes and groups, such as Americans for Prosperity and the American Energy Alliance. Those organizations have run ads favorable to Gardner.

In their request for a debate, NextGen Climate wrote:
The Koch Brothers have always been shrouded in secrecy, their labyrinth of shadowy organizations have spent hundreds of millions of dollars benefiting candidates who deny basic science and push legislation that enables climate change.
Charles Koch has already mourned the oppression of “free and open debate.” Here’s his chance to do something about it:
Tom Steyer has invited Charles and David Koch to a public debate on climate change. Let’s see if they really know how a democracy works and where their money is going.
