Poll: Who are political ‘bystanders’?
By Jonathan Topaz, July 7, 2014

Ten percent of the adult U.S. population is politically disengaged, a new poll says.

According to a Pew Research poll released Monday, one in 10 Americans is a “political bystander” — defined by the polling firm as someone who is not registered to vote and who pays little or no attention to politics. Nearly four in 10 Americans in this bystanders population — 38 percent — are under 30.

A third of bystanders are foreign-born and 32 percent are Hispanic.

While bystanders are largely apolitical — nearly three-quarters of them say they have no interest in politics or government — they tend to have more favorable feelings toward the Democratic Party than the Republican Party. Bystanders are also more likely to have more liberal views on same-sex marriage and government aid to the poor, though a majority believes abortion should be illegal in most cases.

Bystanders are also more likely to be less educated, with 67 percent of bystanders having received a high school degree or less.
