"If politicians are permitted to inject their religious beliefs on constituents through legislation favoring one religious view over another, someone’s freedom of religion will by definition be compromised."

Worried about politicians breaking down ‘wall’
Letter to the Editor by Brian Smith, July 20, 2014

Just to review, the First Amendment of our Bill of Rights states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” and the Fourteenth Amendment also applies these limits to state governments.

I believe that governments at all levels need to understand and respect our forefather’s magnificent idea that there must be a wall between government and religion in order to protect religious freedom.

If politicians are permitted to inject their religious beliefs on constituents through legislation favoring one religious view over another, someone’s freedom of religion will by definition be compromised.

Therefore, I am very concerned that House Speaker and U.S. Senate hopeful Thom Tillis feels that NC state government should be allowed to endorse a religious opinion about abortion on state-issued license plates.

His efforts to use government and my tax dollars to legislate laws that retain a “Choose Life” plate option while not allowing a “Support Choice” option obviously runs counter to the First Amendment.

I can only assume that should he win a U.S. Senate seat, he will shout a resounding “no’’ when asked to swear that he will defend our Constitution.

He would be a liar otherwise.
