Not only does Cruz try to repeal non-existent laws, but he lies to children, too!

Ted Cruz Assures New Hampshire Child That the World Is on Fire
Great moments in campaigning around children.
By David Weigel, March 16, 2015

When he visited New Hampshire last week, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham had a pre-fab apology ready in case he skimped on future campaign stops. "The world's in flames," he kept saying.

On his own New Hampshire trip, Texas Senator Ted Cruz went on a similar rhetorical journey. "The Obama economy is a disaster. Obamacare is a train wreck. And the Obama-Clinton foreign policy of leading from behind—the whole world's on fire!"

Julie Trant, a child in the audience, took this literally. "The world's on fire?" she asked.

"The world is on fire, yes," said Cruz, not missing a beat as the crowd chuckled. "Your world is on fire. But you know what? Your mommy's here, and everyone's here to make sure that the world you grow up in is even better."

As Bloomberg Politics's Mike Nizza pointed out, in December, "the world's on fire" is a sturdy arrow in Cruz's Quiver of Hyperbole. Yet the new clip became the newsiest part of Cruz's trip, helped by misleading headlines like "Ted Cruz Shouts Insane Rhetoric At Terrified Little Girl In New Hampshire." Trant, with the innocence of a child, had taken some political hyperbole too seriously—something adults in the media would never, ever do.
