"... a blatant, blatant violation ..." of the Michigan constitution "and it is offensive to think that people can use their faith as a weapon like that ..."

COMMENTS:
*  a thousand gay marriages do not lessen, degrade, or desanctify my straight, faithful marriage by one. single. atom.  No one's joy is lessened by another's joy. Shared joy is DOUBLED.  No one's faith is lessened by another's coming to the fold any more than is one's faith increased by another's leaving it.  These are not finite quantities. It's not like oil, it's not going to run out one day.  If your life is made less happy by someone else's happiness, that's on you, not on them. And if that's the case, I will pray for you, as you seem to be in need of it and I won't run out of that either giving it to you.
*  I hate to break it to you, but the right to practice your religion does NOT include the right to force other people to obey the tenets of your religion. The Constitution absolutely does allow you to practice your religion. It does not allow you to prevent me from practicing mine - or practicing none at all, if I choose. You see, your rights end where my face begins.
*  Clergy means any clergy, not just Christians. So, if you're a minister of the Church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster, you can sign that paper, and it's all good. This is unconstitutional, but it's not going to stop anyone from getting married, lol.
*  Ah, yes... the 'agenda' to be treated just like everyone else. You know who the real freaks are, these days? The ones that no one loves? Bigots. No one loves a bigot. This is because bigotry is a choice. The negative impact on society is blindingly clear, the foul nature of it is easily apparent, and no one is born a bigot. Nothing has done more damage to society, hurt more people, or resulted in more misery than bigotry. I think we need to toss all those freaks into cages where they can't contaminate the kids.

Michigan Bill Would Require All Marriages To Be Sanctioned By Religion
By CBS Detroit, June 18, 2015

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hand down what could be a historic ruling on gay marriage this month, in Michigan there’s an effort underway that would put some legal obstacles in the way.

Republican Representative Todd Courser from Lapeer County says one of the bills would require that a clergy member sign any marriage certificate in Michigan.

“I’m completely traditional marriage – I believe that the traditional marriage is really God’s model for marriage. I don’t believe that government has a role in it,” says Courser.

Courser tells Newsradio 950 that he expects court challenges should his bills become law.
“It would take the idea of officiating marriages out of the hands of the … elected officials and put it back into the hands of those in ministry,” said Courser.

“The contract that has been in place for thousands of years is between a man and his wife on one side and God on the other side,” he expounds on his Michigan House Republican website.

Regina Calcagno from the group “Michigan For Marriage” says mandating religious marriages just won’t fly:
“That is a blatant, blatant violation of our constitution and it is offensive to think that people can use their faith as a weapon like that,” said Calcagno. “I have countless … leaders who are very much in support of their freedom to marry – they are currently having their religious freedom undermined by the fact that the state won’t allow them to marry same-sex couples.”
Under the legislation, noted as House Bills 4731, 4732, and 4733, the licensing components of marriage would remain a government responsibility, but municipal and judicial officials would no longer have the ability to perform wedding ceremonies. The bills protect public officials from being forced to perform same-sex marriages.
