Trump Spokesperson Blames Obama For Foreign Policy Decisions That Bush Actually Made
Katrina Pierson is struggling to recall dates.

Katrina Pierson, a spokesperson for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, is struggling to remember the dates that President Obama has been in office.

During an appearance on CNN on Saturday morning, responding to controversy over Trump’s recent assertion that Obama founded ISIS, Pierson suggested Obama does bear the responsibility for the rise of the terrorist group because he decided to invade Afghanistan.

Pierson said that “Barack Obama went into Afghanistan,” referring to the military conflict there as “Obama’s war.”

“You’re saying Barack Obama took the country into Afghanistan post-2009?” CNN anchor Victor Blackwell asked. Pierson responded yes.

Of course, as Blackwell reminded Pierson after a commercial break, former President George W. Bush is the one who actually invaded Afghanistan shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. Obama didn’t take office until years later, in January of 2009.

And during his bid for the White House, one of Obama’s major campaign promises was that he would withdraw troops from Afghanistan and end the war (though that certainly didn’t work out exactly as he promised).

Pierson’s confusion over the timeline in Afghanistan follows similar confusion from the Trump campaign over the timeline in Iraq.

Earlier this month, during another CNN interview, Pierson suggested that Obama was responsible for the death of Muslim American solider Capt. Humayun Khan, who died in Iraq in 2004.

After Khan’s parents gave a powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention criticizing the GOP presidential nominee’s rhetoric about Islam, the Trump campaign issued a series of smears against them. Pierson attempted to brush aside calls for the campaign to apologize by suggesting that the Khan family’s loss was Obama’s fault.

“It was under Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that changed the rules of engagement that probably cost his life,” Pierson told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

Again, 2004 was several years before Obama actually took office, when Bush was still the president and the commander-in-chief.

Pierson eventually acknowledged she was “absolutely” wrong to place the blame on Obama for a soldier’s death that occurred four years before he became president.
