Trump spokeswoman blames Obama for 2004 death of Captain Khan

Donald Trump’s spokeswoman blamed the policies of President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for the death of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, despite the fact that Khan died in 2004.

“It was under Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that changed the rules of engagement that probably cost his life,” spokeswoman Katrina Pierson said in an interview Tuesday with CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer.

Khan died during the presidency of George W. Bush, while Obama was a state senator in Illinois.

Khan is the son of Ghazala and Khizr Khan, whose condemnation of Trump on Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention received widespread coverage.

Rules of engagement constitute the military policy that specify when soldiers are authorized for use of force.

Trump fired back at the Khans after the speech, drawing bipartisan criticism from officials including Obama and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Rep. Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) said he would vote for Clinton over Trump following his comments about the Gold Star family.

Pierson also said in the CNN interview that Trump “never voted for the Iraq War.” BuzzFeed previously reported that Trump expressed support for the invasion during a 2002 interview with radio host Howard Stern.

Trump spokeswoman reverses: Obama not responsible for Khan's death in 2004

Donald Trump’s national spokeswoman on Wednesday cleared up whom she holds responsible for the death of Army Capt. Humayun Khan in 2004, and it’s not Barack Obama. It’s Hillary Clinton.

Less than a day after blaming the policies of Obama and his secretary of state for Khan’s death in Iraq despite George W. Bush having been in the White House, Katrina Pierson laid the blame at the feet of Clinton, who as a U.S. senator representing New York voted to authorize the war in 2002.

Asked on CNN’s “New Day” whether she wished to apologize to Khizr Khan, the father of the fallen soldier who had on Tuesday night blasted her “lack of understanding” and “lack of factual correctness,” Pierson responded, “Apologize for the timeline.”

“What I was talking about is the fact that Donald Trump has no connection to anything having to do with Capt. Khan, who was a brave war hero. The timeline is very simple and true, Alisyn,” she told co-host Alisyn Camerota. “Hillary Clinton voted for the war in Iraq. She did not support the surge. Barack Obama made things worse by invading more countries than President Bush did.”

Camerota noted that Khan was killed in 2004 when Bush was president.

“But Donald Trump wasn’t there,” Pierson said. “That is the only point. That’s the only point. Donald Trump is being blamed for something he had nothing to do with, and he did not attack this family.”

Co-anchor John Berman reminded Pierson that on Tuesday she had told Wolf Blitzer that Clinton and Obama changed the combat rules of engagement that “probably cost his life.”

“You do acknowledge now that there you were just wrong?” Berman asked.

“Well, absolutely,” Pierson said. “That’s why I used ‘probably,’ because I was just going through the timeline, because since then we have had tens of thousands of soldiers that have been lost, 1 million wounded, $6 trillion later. How can we possibly put any the onerous [sic] on Donald Trump? It is absolutely absurd. And that’s why you see all this confusion surrounding this issue, because Donald Trump had absolutely nothing to do with this.”

As Camerota reminded her that she had blamed Obama, Pierson responded, “No, I was talking about Hillary Clinton specifically voting for the war. That was during that time period.”
