Is McCain returning to the senator he was before 2008?

McCain’s Hobbits Remark: The Maverick Returns

Posted by Jen Sheers on Wednesday, August 3, 2011

I couldn’t believe it when last week John McCain called out the GOP on their intransigence in dealing with the debt ceiling by using a Lord of The Rings Analogy. Is this the same McCain that saddled us with a monstrosity of his own creation in the form of Sarah I-Can-See-Russia-From-My-House Palin as his VP running mate in 2008?

In a Senate floor speech, McCain said it is “foolish” and “deceiving” for Republican colleagues to claim a balanced-budget amendment has a chance of passing by next week…. “That is not fair to the American people, to hold out and say we won’t agree to raising the debt limit until we pass a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution,” McCain said… “The idea seems to be that if the House GOP refuses to raise the debt ceiling, a default crisis or gradual government shutdown will ensue, and the public will turn en masse against … Barack Obama,” he said, quoting the [Wall Street Journal]. “The Republican House that failed to raise the debt ceiling would somehow escape all blame. Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced-budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the Tea Party Hobbits could return to Middle Earth having defeated Mordor.” [The Hill]

Oh, McCain, you’re such a maverick! What could possibly have gone into you to say such a thing? At a time when the GOP is being run by a bunch of lunatics with the one-track mindset of recovering the White House in 2012 (at any cost) you, of all people, have the courage to face them. “Tea Party Hobbits”? What a mavericky thing to say! Could it be that you’re returning to the senator you once were before the 2008 elections? Whatever the reason, you’ve given me the only reason to laugh about this whole debt ceiling debacle. And for that, senator, I thank you.
