Finally, Democrats are working against the Koch brothers

Dems fight back against Koch brothers in e-mail campaign
By Fredreka Schouten, February 13, 2014

Two Republicans are the stars of a flurry of fundraising pitches from Democrats this week: Charles and David Koch.

Americans for Prosperity, the conservative advocacy group aligned with the billionaire brothers, has spent some $27 million since last October to slam President Obama’s health care law. Much of the money is trained at vulnerable House and Senate Democratic incumbents, rattling the party ahead of November’s congressional elections. Republicans need to net just six seats to take control of the Senate.

In increasingly frantic emails, Democrats are imploring their supporters to send in the campaign dough to help them fight back or sign petitions to register their outrage.

In one appeal, dubbed “Big checkbooks,” Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., argues the industrialists are trying to “buy the Senate.”

The e-mail links supporters to www.stopthekochbrothers.com, a joint project of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and seven Democratic incumbents and candidates.

“You should decide who represents you in the Senate – not shadowy outsiders who are focused on their own self-interests,” Pryor tells supporters.

Another email from EMILY’s List, which backs female, pro-abortion-rights candidates, warns the “Koch brothers are back” and seeks money to help Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., who has taken the brunt of the barrage from Americans for Prosperity.

The Kochs recently fired back on a top Democrat who criticized them on the Senate floor. Last month, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused the powerful pair of trying to “buy our country.”

In a statement, Philip Ellender, Koch Companies Public Sector president, called Reid’s remarks “disrespectful” and “indicative of what lengths he and his Democratic allies will go to eliminate and silence their political opposition.”

The brothers, he added, “will continue to exercise their First Amendment rights to advocate for their fundamental beliefs.”
