Marking Veterans Day

..............................................................

Veterans Day remembrance 2012
By Jas Gabbidon, November 10, 2012

Every year on November 11th, our nation reserves time to pay respect, and to give honor to our soldiers and veterans of war in celebration of Veteran’s Day.

Across the fifty states which comprise our United States of America, plans are underway for parades, memorial services, the laying of wreaths, and other wonderful programs of praise and adoration for the beloved heroes of these great states.

Though all of these programs are highly merited, the New York City Veterans Parade is the one that resonates in my mind because of their determination to celebrate the contributions of our soldiers despite their struggles, and continued uprising from Hurricane Sandy’s debilitating rains; which left many New Yorkers without power, heat and in many cases without shelter.

In the face of their burdens and need, these citizens of New York City vehemently prepare for their parade proclaiming: Ready to March!

The resilience of the New York City citizens should probe us all to a state of thankfulness and remembrance.

On November 11th, take the time to thank a veteran who has willingly served to protect the freedoms which we all hold dearly. If you don’t personally know a veteran, you can still partake in the celebration of this day by taking a few moments to say a prayer for those families who have relatives who serve for our country.

In personal tribute, I share a few lines from a poem written by Siegfried Sassoon:

Soldiers are citizens of death’s grey land,

Drawing no dividend from times to-morrow,

In the great home of destiny they stand…….
