POLITICS: Words have way of becoming deeds

[snipped] Republicans continue to lace their language with the rhetoric of violence.

Words matter. They become deeds...[snipped]

Mark my words: America has as much to fear from its own far right as from foreign terrorists.

[snipped] this nation will explode with the same sectarian violence we so righteously try to suppress in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Was it something I responded?

LTE Thread. Down for the count. About 8:45pm.

First Red Foreskin wanted a piece of me. Then the Sock Drawer opened. Socks to the Right of me, Socks to the Right of me (never on the Left). I definitely responded. I refuse to put up with their shit.

I went to refresh and BOOM....BOOM....BOOM....out went the lights!!!

Something tells me that they got wind of my conversations with Tammy. I know how to deal with that.

Longer comments on the "O"?

Thank you, Olympian, for giving us more characters with which to vent!

When did the "O" start allowing longer comments? Where was it announced and how many characters are allowable?

Pre-written script for Republicans

[snipped]

“As this important work goes on, we are proud to have the able assistance of the patriotic Americans in the tea party movement. Some have suggested that the Republican Party, the party of Reagan and Lincoln, should be ashamed of its close affiliation with these patriots.

“We reject that idea. Indeed, if our critics know nothing else about us after this long and rancorous debate, they should know this:

“We have no shame.

How true-- Pitts hit this nail on the head! To see the proof of this part of his "script", just watch the frothing-at-the-mouth comments the righties will be posting today..........

A walk through the good old days....

Some of you may remember when I was tossed off The Olympian (supposedly forever) for calling an ass, an ass. This introduced me to Olyblog. I must admit I've drifted from Olyblog and probably just as well, as I didn't fit the 'intellectual" mode expected there. I think you all know, I call 'em as I see 'em. Rick has done well with his blog, but he really didn't want me to be honest and frank. That didn't work for me.

Anyway....I tripped across this while googling "Aaron Mason". Aaron was once The O's moderator and was the one that executed my lifetime banning, that lasted a few months. What made me think about this was the present moderator telling me that if I feel my privacy is violated I have to report it. She got 8 such reports this weekend. Mason pulled the same deal and when he got 15 reports in a week, he went crying to the Publisher, at that time John Winn Miller. John, although an associate in philanthropic endeavors, sent me a scathing email and cut off relations with my agency.

So....here is a walk into the time machine that is Olympia, 2007....

I mentioned in the Open Thread
Submitted by Anonymously Larry on Sun, 11/11/2007 - 7:24pm.

The stark differences between Aaron Mason's comment -
Pretty much every single one of those protestors behaved in a confrontational, disrespectful, and aggressive manner.

And the quote from the Mayor's office -
While most demonstrators have been respectful of the rights of others and have expressed their views lawfully

This contrast brings me to several questions. Is the Mayor's office just patronizing the masses? Was the Mayor's office correct in their assessment? Is Mason wrong, mistaken, biased or absolutely correct?

Here is the tricky part - media is a powerful tool. We watched in 2004 how a medal winning veteran could be turned into a treasonous traitor if the right words were said over and over enough times. I respected the soldier in the video as he seemed very thoughtful, all the time remembering the Non-Com quoted in Sarah's thread that said soldiers are not allowed to comment negatively about the military. Thus, that fine soldier in the video was sort of locked in on that interview. I've witnessed Jeff's idea of the First Amendment and have noticed that if he isn't able to get a rise out of someone, he loses interest fast. The other gentleman was pleasant and heartfelt, but seemed to lack depth in his dialog. Meanwhile many people will walk away with an opinion of our community based on what they see, read and hear in a 3rd party sense, concerning these protests.

We have but one choice - research. We all owe it to ourselves to seek as many sources of information as possible to formulate the opinion and story that we take into our lives about our community.

Now is not the time to seek the quick and dirty answers, folks.

I hope those of you remembering the atmosphere during the Port protests can reflect.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans were for President Barack Obama's requirement that Americans get health insurance before they were against it. The obligation in the new health care law is a Republican idea that's been around at least two decades. It was once trumpeted as an alternative to Bill and Hillary Clinton's failed health care overhaul in the 1990s. These days, Republicans call it government overreach.

A 6-year-old boy from China, who was born with 5 extra fingers and 6 extra toes, has undergone an operation to remove his extra digits, the Daily Mail reported. If you do the math – that’s 31 fingers and toes.
The unnamed child suffered from a condition known as polydactyly, in which a person has more than five fingers per hand and five toes per foot. This condition can occur on its own without any other symptoms or underlying disease, according to the National Institutes of Health, or may be inherited.
In this case, the boy appeared to have central polydactyly, where an extra digit of a long or ring finger is concealed in a web between the adjoining normal fingers.
The boy’s mother said he has been ridiculed all his life because of the malformation, but thanks to a six hour surgery at a hospital in Shenyang, China, doctors were able to remove the extra toes and fingers.

Years ago a still unknown prankster put up anti-Bush I handbills in downtown Olympia which included the tag line: Paid for by the committee to kill the President. The poster, (i.e. a piece of paper and not an author) drew the attention of the FBI who dispatched a three person FBI investigative team. Three months later the FBI closed the investigation after turning up nothing.

Hello FBI, here is a clear death threat against the President of the United States. I hope if nothing else you can make this asshat's life uncomfortable.

WWJD

Ken Pagano, the pastor of the New Bethel Church in Louisville, KY, recently invited his congregation to bring their unloaded firearms into the house of worship to “celebrate our rights as Americans!” Yesterday’s bring-your-gun-to-church day, to which more than 200 people showed up, also featured “a $1 raffle of a handgun, firearms safety lessons and a picnic.” Pagano reportedly thought up the event “after some church members expressed concern about members of President Barack Obama administration’s views on gun control, though the president hasn’t moved to put new restrictions on ownership.

SondraK lies as usual

The following is from the Seattle PI in its entire context. Sondra, as usual, edited it to take it out of context and try to create a "Malkin"....

The mother of a Ballard High School student is fuming after the health center on campus helped facilitate her daughter's abortion during school hours.

The mother, whom KOMO News has chosen to identify only as "Jill," says the clinic kept the information "confidential."

When she signed a consent form, Jill figured it meant her 15-year-old could go to the Ballard Teen Health Center located inside the high school for an earache, a sports physical, even birth control, but not for help terminating a pregnancy.

"She took a pregnancy test at school at the teen health center," she said. "Nowhere in this paperwork does it mention abortion or facilitating abortion."

Jill says her daughter, a pro-life advocate, was given a pass, put in a taxi and sent off to have an abortion during school hours, all without her family knowing.

"We had no idea this was being facilitated on campus," said Jill. "They just told her that if she concealed it from her family, that it would be free of charge and no financial responsibility."
The Seattle School District says it doesn't run the health clinics at high schools.

Swedish Medical Center runs the clinic at Ballard High and protects the students' privacy.

Now my question....if Jill's daughter is "pro-life" why didn't she refuse the abortion. Better yet what is a 15 year old doing having "private time" with a boy in order to have sex to become pregnant?

Shades of Palinism.

Well, we all saw it coming...

Sarah Palin has just inked a deal with Mark Burnett to host a reality TV show for the Discovery Channel..

It's basically a docu-drama about people and places in Alaska, not a political show..

It'll cost $1 million dollars an episode..

I just wish Burnett could have talked her into doing "Survivor: Alaska"

No other contestants..

Just her..

Drive her out into the tundra and just leave her there..with possibly a club to kill some baby seals....

History has been made!

Both necessary bills have been passed!

I'm glad this has happened in my lifetime. I've been fortunate and have never been without access to affordable medical care and/or health insurance to cover catastrophic needs, but I know many people who do not have health insurance because of its cost. It pleases me mightily to see that the majority of the nation's congressional representatives have finally done something positive about health insurance reform!

"Dignity"?

I'm watching the proceedings on C-Span and just heard the following: "The members would do well to remember the dignity of the House" (or words to that effect), uttered by the presiding Speaker of the U.S. House following an outburst in response to inflammatory utterances by Rep. John Boehner. Boehner did nothing to help anybody remember that dignity. LOL

Something for IV to salivate over?

We're waiting, IV.......

Three little words.

That’s what keeps bringing us back to this intersection of low comedy and pathos. Three words, none longer than three letters – and yet, some of us still find them nearly impossible to say.

Three words: I am gay.

[snip]

Because for all the laughter these men evoke with their lies to self and tortured rationalizations to us, I find I have also, hidden in the breath between ha and ha, a certain bittersweet pity. There’s just something ineffably “pathetic” in the inability of these middle-age men, in the Year Of Our Lord 2010, post-“Will & Grace,” post Ellen DeGeneres, post-Barney Frank, Elton John, Meredith Baxter and Neil Patrick Harris, to simply stand up and say those three simple words.

[snip]

So you have to wonder: How many Massas and Ashburns, how many Jim Wests, Ted Haggards, Mark Foleys and Larry Craigs do we have to see, how many shocked spouses and embarrassed children do we have to endure, how many lies, alibis and justifications do we need to hear, before we accept the obvious: Gay is not a choice, gay is not a sin, gay is not a shame.

Gay simply is

LTE Comment of the Day

hot_sauce wrote on 03/15/2010 12:12:49 PM:
Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska, ventured to the Florida district of Rep. Alan Grayson on Friday, and urged voters to oust the Democratic lawmaker."Do it for the rest of America," she said in a speech to the Orange County Republican Party's annual Lincoln Day fundraiser.

She claimed to have such strong feelings about Grayson that she declined to get into specifics to avoid offending her children.

The Grayson campaign is now giving it back to Palin, saying that he was impressed she was able to fit his entire name on her hand."I look forward to an honest debate with Governor Palin on the issues, in the unlikely event that she ever learns anything about them," Grayson said.

His campaign added that "scientists are studying Sarah Palin's travel between Alaska and Florida carefully. They hope to learn more about the flight patterns of that elusive migratory species, the wild Alaskan dingbat."

That, according to federal prosecutors, is the name Colleen LaRose used ... [snip]

Jihad Jane ... is, according to published reports and photos, 4-foot-11 tall, 105 pounds and 46 years of age, with pale skin, blond hair and blue eyes.

There are several good arguments against profiling. It’s morally wrong. It’s an abridgement of civil liberties.

But the most compelling of them is embodied by Jihad Jane. [snip]

So we should be thankful for the vigilance of federal authorities who nabbed Jihad Jane. In the process, they remind us: Evil is not a color, a religion, a gender or a style of dress.

Change museum’s name

Olympia’s popular children’s attraction should be retitled Children’s Hands-on Museum — with or without the hyphen.
To continue to call it the Hands on Children’s Museum is confusing and suggests an attraction for pedophiles.
I hope to goodness this title is corrected — preferably immediately — and definitely before another facility is built.
On request, I have contributed funds to support this museum, which my grandchildren, their friends and parents have enjoyed. But for years I’ve felt strongly that its title is confusing and should be changed — for clarity and in the best interests of the children.
I’m finally expressing myself on this matter, with wishes for all the best!

It's not just The Olympian LTE Thread....

I guess the new activity on electronically run forums is to hit the complain link and have the comments pulled, when you disagree.

I've been standing my ground in a musicians forum on an issue about underselling the marketplace and giving away services. It seems my position isn't popular among a few of the crowd and while they call me "ass" and "asshole" in their posts, my clean worded response just happens to get pulled from the forum. Who should honor freedom of expression more than musicians and artists?

Internet forums, ThurstonBlog being no exception, are not run by someone monitoring them 24/7, thus there are electronic devises to lodge complaints about abusive comments. They were not intended to be there for additional abuse by those that can't handle someone disagreeing with their stance on an issue. I noted that at the end of the evening "billo" had a comment deleted that was a response to "OlyRagToo's" ridiculous comment that someone pilfering candy from the bins at Top Foods was an indicator of "entitlement behavior". Since "tin foil hat" is a commonly used phrase on the LTE thread, you know it's not actual abuse. Someone has figured out the magic number of complaints to lodge to have a comment deleted. Of late, on the LTE thread, one of our regulars has noted this and conferred with Tammy McGee, who has confirmed that Pluck has a software glitch that allows for this abuse.

For all the grousing that goes on about freedom of speech, I'm amused at the lengths that people will go to, in order to strangle the freedom of speech of others.

Coffee Party: “Wake Up and Stand Up”

It was bound to happen........

Fed up with government gridlock, but put off by the flavor of the Tea Party, people in cities across the country are offering an alternative: the Coffee Party.
[snip]
The slogan is “Wake Up and Stand Up.” The mission statement declares that the federal government is “not the enemy of the people, but the expression of our collective will, and that we must participate in the democratic process in order to address the challenges we face as Americans.”
[snip]
This summer, Ms. [Annabel] Park said, the party will hold a convention in the Midwest, with a slogan along the lines of “Meet Me in the Middle.” The party has inspired the requisite jokes: why not a latte party, a chai party, a Red Bull party? But Ms. Park said that while the Coffee Party — and certainly the name — was formed in reaction to the Tea Party, the two agree on some things, like a desire for fiscal responsibility and a frustration with Congress.

“We’re not the opposite of the Tea Party,” Ms. Park, 41, said. “We’re a different model of civic participation, but in the end we may want some of the same things.”

The Tea Party argues for stripping the federal government of many of its roles, and that if government has to be involved, it should be mostly state governments.

“The way I see it,” Ms. Park said, “our government is diseased, but you don’t abandon it because it’s ill. It’s the only body we have to address collective problems. You can’t bound government according to state borders when companies don’t do that, air doesn’t. It just doesn’t fit with the world.”

Still, she said, “we’ve got to send a message to people in Washington that you have to learn how to work together, you have to learn how to talk about these issues without acting like you’re in an ultimate fighting session.” [snip]

Nazi tattoos hidden from jury

A MAN accused of breaking into his neighbour's house and stabbing two people - killing one of them - is having neo-Nazi tattoos on his face covered up for his murder trial.
A make-up artist is being paid up to $US150 ($165) a day to cover the tattoos on John Allen Ditullio's face and neck after a judge ruled they should be hidden from a jury, the Associated Press has reported.
Ditullio faces trial on charges of murder and attempted murder over a 2006 stabbing attack in a town north of Tampa, Florida. His lawyer argued the tattoos - which Ditullio had done after his arrest - would scare or prejudice the jury against him.
The judge agreed, ordering a 15cm swastika on Ditullio's neck and barbed wire tattoo across his right eye be painted over. Any tattoos he had before his arrest will not be covered.

Ditullio is accused of putting on a gas mask, then breaking into a neighbour's house and stabbing one person to death and badly injuring another. He faces the death penalty if convicted.
"Whenever someone is facing the death penalty, they should get a fair trial," his lawyer, public defender Bjorn Brunvand said.
"The jury can judge this case on the facts and the law and not base their decision on being offended."
Ditullio was also shaven and generally tidied up for his court appearances so far, as is normally the case for defendants at trial.
Tattoos have also been covered for the trial in Texas of an assassin for a Mexican drug cartel.

Huffington Post

Interesting review of the Huffington Post....

[snip] ... As an example of a popular piece I looked at one written by Sam Stein with the title Palin Considering 2012 Run, Defends Limbaugh`s Use of "Retard` on Fox News Sunday. I`m trying to understand why this piece has garnered so much traffic. As of 6:07 AM, 2/10/`10, it had 42 Diggs and 18,384 comments. I kid you not! I didn`t see a read count, but I suspect it`s over a million.

The bullet to this is that Palin may run for president in 2012. This was widely reported in other news services, so why is the HuffPost getting 18,384 comments? I can only venture a guess, but I believe it`s because people know if their comment is published many people will see it and they can get a foot in the door, in terms of persuasion. The comments are as important as the article itself. By involving people in the process, they become a part of the media.

Bingo! This is the key to the success of The Huffington Post. There is much variety in the content as well. Really though, politics is their specialty, but they have branched off into entertainment, media, sports, business, living and even green. So there is something for everybody! Just as people like to go to Wal-Mart for all their shopping needs, people also like to go to one news source for their insatiable cravings for information.[snip]

"... "Liberalism"—which [Satoshi] Kanazawa defines, in part, as caring about the well-being of vast numbers of people you'll never meet—"is a very new thing for humans," he said.

"Historically, humans cared about the welfare of immediate family and friends but not complete strangers." ..."

We certainly see this among the usual suspects who post to the Olympian. LOL

Still waiting Sondrak

So I took her up on her assertion that she is open to all political views on her blog. Now I respect her right to moderate her blog but I want to put her commitment to free speech to the test. The following is the extent of our exchange so far.

Dear A. Smith,
Tell us a little about yourself and why you feel you'd be an asset to and why you are interested in our growing blog community!
I await your reply in earnest,
SondraK
You asked me for a few words about myself. Here goes.

I’m a 47 year old single straight white man who spent his formative years and the balance of his adult life in and around Olympia Washington. I am an elected Precinct Committee officer with the Thurston County Democrats but my politics are to the left of my Party.

I believe wise government is the only thing that stands between freedom and the barbarism of unrestrained Capitalism and the in fact it is liberalism in the 19th century understanding of the term that has repeatedly saved the Free Market from collapsing from its inherit contradictions.

I believe our rights as enumerated in the Constitution do not end at the workplace.

I believe consenting adults should be free to do as they please with the caveat of do no harm, from whom they choose to marry, what they ingest or how they make a living.

I believe the 2nd amendment is in fact about state militias but in our modern world I support the right of a law abiding individual to lawfully possess handguns, shot guns and rifles.

In short my politics are the kind that Glenn Beck thinks should be eradicated.

My reasons for requesting posting privileges on your site are two fold. One, I am testing your commitment to tolerance of different perspectives. Two, I think all of us would benefit from stepping outside our respective noise machines.

Truth is I find your site repulsive and read it less than weekly but once in a blue moon I find something of interest on it. I make this application not thinking I'll change anyone's mind nor to pick fights: I only would like the opportunity to offer up dissenting opinions on your site.

Respectfully A. Smith

or are you just glad to see me?

I also love Sondras Blog Motto...

"What the hell kind of country is this where I can only hate a man if he’s white? "

========================
Why do you feel the need to hate ANYONE? Black, white, brown, yellow???

Oh, wait..You're too insecure...

...Nevermind,...

passenger eats winning scratchcard

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/7330126/Frustrated-Ryanair-passenger-eats-winning-scratchcard.html

I don't know.........it seems tabloid to me but still amusing. It's much like the kind of thing one might read on the shitter(if you don't mind my American English) of a trailer in the bowels of Lacey... not that I,...your author..would know of such a thing first hand. Huh, make no mistake of this simple fact.......I have always lived a very privileged lifestyle. Yeah....full of all kinds of great shit in Olympia...ahhhhh screw you for judging me(unless you judged me favorably).

A worthwhile read

“The Peaceable Mongoose” by James Thurber.

“In Cobra Country, a mongoose was born one day who didn‘t want to
fight cobras or anything else. The word spread from mongoose to mongoose
that there was a mongoose who didn‘t want to fight cobras. If he didn‘t
want to fight anything else, it was his own business, but it was the duty
of every mongoose to kill cobras or be killed by cobras.

“Why, asked the peace-like mongoose, and the word went around that
the strange new mongoose was not only pro-cobra and anti-mongoose, but
intellectually curious and against the ideals and traditions of mongoosism.

‘He is crazy,‘ cried the young mongoose‘s father. ‘He is sick,‘ said his
mother. ‘He is a coward,‘ shouted his brothers. ‘He is a mongoose-
sexual,‘ whispered his sisters.

“Strangers who had never laid eyes on the peace-like mongoose
remembered that they had seen him crawling on his stomach or trying on
cobra hoods or plotting the violent overthrow of Mongoosia.

‘I‘m trying to use reason and intelligence,‘ said the strange new
mongoose. ‘Reason is six-sevenths of treason,‘ said one of his neighbors.

‘Intelligence is what the enemy uses,‘ said another.

“Finally, the rumor spread that the mongoose had venom in his sting,
just like a cobra, and he was tried, convicted by a show of paws, and
condemned to banishment.

“Moral? Ashes to ashes and clay to clay; if the enemy doesn‘t get
you, your own folks may.”

You don't fear communism or socialism, but the IDEA that has been placed in your head about what those systems might bring. You think of socialism or communism and you see exactly what your parents told you to see.Of course, you will deny this. But that doesn't change anything. We see that it is most likely true.

I dont fear these things farmboy but I do know what a Socialist is and that Communism has never existed. It people like yourself who thrive so well in a Socialist Society. YOu know history so well farmboy why would you even bring up communism since it has never existed. Socialism is easy to pick up the few provide for the many. Socialism has NO room for individuals. They seek conformers such as you.=============

You heard it here first, folks...Communism has NEVER EXISTED...BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHA

This will whip the righties into even greater fury

By Leonard Pitts Jr.
Published: 02/28/10

[snipped]
... ultimately, people seem moved by something even bigger than race. This is race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, “culture,” and the fact that those who have always been on the right side, the “power-wielding” side, of one or more of those equations, now face the realization that their days of dominance are numbered.

There is a poignancy to their responsive fury because one senses that the nether side of it is a choking fear. We are witness to the birth cries of a new America, and for every one of us who embraces and celebrates that, who looks forward to the opportunity and inclusiveness it promises, there is another who grapples with a crippling sense of dislocation and loss, who wonders who and what he or she will be in the nation now being born.

One hopes they will find answers that satisfy them because the change they fear will not be turned back. No one ever volunteers to return to the rear of the bus.

So for all the frustration the tea party movement engenders among the rest of us, one also feels a certain pity for people like the woman last year who cried, plaintively, that she wanted her country back.

As if she didn’t realize that it is already, irrevocably, gone.
