It certainly appears that he's another in a long line of people in the public eye who must believe either that they're above the law or that nobody will catch them.
Is stupidity genetic or contagious? There's so much of it in the news lately that it must be contagious. LOL
I think there's a lot more to this story than meets the eye. The whole "concerned citizens going to the sheriff" thing just smells fishy. Why would they go to the sheriff, rather than Oly PD?
The accusations may very well be true, to some degree, but it just doesn't "feel" right, somehow..
I think the people that went to law enforcement were only concerned about the impact it would make on Joe if he was found guilty or not. I think he was most likely just a middleman between two friends or was dipping into his own personal stash to hook someone up. Some like to harp on the fact that it is still illegal and they are correct. Some say he would have to be an idiot to risk his political career and I disagree. I say he would have been getting some pretty good pot to forget that what he was doing was stupid. I noticed that there hasn't been much focus on his sexual preference and that makes me think that much more there might be some of that at play in this but in Olympia 2010 it's just the 1000 pound gorilla in the room nobody wants to talk about because that might lead to discussion of discrimination. It's kind of like how a racist will always try to avoid talking about race when it comes to criticizing President Obama. It can be tuff be a survivor without pissing off a few jury members along the way and this just might get Joe off the island but the tribe hasn't fully spoken yet. Unfortunately I believe he will be proven guilty but fortunately I think he will get a light sentence and it would be funny to see him going to drug court. No matter what he isn't going to prison or roam the earth a vagabond pothead with a phony name and a thousand yard stare.
I do have to agree with you on that, sidrat. The timing is just too coincidental, but still there is the point that multiple "packages" of marijuana were found in his house. I haven't read anything where he claims that the MJ was "planted" (no pun intended) by someone in his house.
When the timing seems like it was just too wacky to be a coincidence then it most likely was. It all does stink worst then Sondra's breath after an anchovie and dookie sandwhich fallowed by a twelve inch cuban and axel grease cigar.
Joe is collateral damage in the war between the County Commissioners and the Sheriff Department. Someone with a grudge against Joe presented an opportunity to Dan Kimball and Kimball ran with it. There were a dozen ways of handling this from ignoring the malcontent to what Kimball chose; turn an nickle and dime dope deal into a high profile case rife with the uber-message: You do not fuck with The Man. Commissioner Valenzuela, we're looking your way.
I predict the the Prosecutors office will do is offer a single misdemeanor plea bargain with the caveat that the records of the deal are sealed. To protect the identity of the informant of course.
The damage has been done. The message has been sent. The only thing left to do is make sure the real reasons behind this political hit remain ambiguous.
Lost:
I put a headline on your story for consistancy.
I hope you don't mind.

Anon:
I know Dan Kimball quite well and can guarantee you that he wouldn't soil his hands in such horseshit as to injure someone for getting even with The Commissioners. Dan let go of that crap long ago.
There is not a vindictive bone in his body.
Larry, do you think the timing was a matter of when the "concerned citizens" wanted it to go down? If Dan is truly dedicated to his job would he act in kind if the subject of investigation was a fellow officer being accused of a crime of the same caliber? I don't know. What say you? If so then he is a truly a great man for his position. I have my doubts but I don't know the man.
Lost:
I have no doubt that Dan Kimball would arrest a police officer selling marijuana.
Circumstances? I think Hyer has an enemy, but I don't see Kimball as any part of this.
Dan is finishing his term and moving to Port Townsend to care for his mother. He has no dog in Thurston County Political fights.
Larry:
Not necessarily selling pot but something of an equal charge.
I'm sure the timing was likely designed by the informants.
According to the charging papers released today, it seems pretty airtight that Joe was caught dead to rights holding and selling marijuana.
I think we are all better off without Joe in charge of our money.
He should stick to outdoor gear.
So what if he was smoking and turning a little weed. Marijuana prohibition is nothing but a make work program for Cops and Prosecutors.
No harm. No Foul. The only good thing that could come from this is for the city and the county to direct their respective forces to no longer waste their time and out tax money on pot prohibition.
I agree Anon but he was just too sloppy for words.
It would be a much better use of resources to focus on meth and heroin/oxy dealers. They are much more of a destructive element upon the world.
