My Grandmother, was born in 1900 and turned 65 in time to enjoy the new Medicare system. She never paid a dime into it.
My mother was born when Grandma was 20 (almost to the day) and soon left an abusive husband. She raised my mother for the next 16 years (mom married young, as they did in those days) and Grandma continued to support herself. Her primary field was laundry work, but she also cooked in logging camps.
She "retired" to caring for older people (supplementing her Social Security and Medicare) until she was well into her 80s. Grandma didn't like sitting around.
She died at age 96, after 31 years of enjoying Medicare without paying a dime into it.
WOW.....what a burden on society!

My father contributed to SocSec most of his working life (he was about 22 or 23 when payroll taxes were first collected). He retired and started drawing a few hundred a month at age 62 and received SocSec until his death at age 91. Obviously he collected more than he had contributed, particularly since in the early years his income wasn't very high and thus payroll taxes were low. Without SocSec, though, he wouldn't have been able to retire and enjoy a few years with my mother before her death.
