The Olympian wins SPJ award
The Olympian was the first-place winner for Best Website, General News, in the Society of Professional Journalists Northwest 2009 Excellence in Journalism contest.
Second place in the category went to The Oregonian of Portland, and third place went to The Seattle Times. The Olympian competed against websites of all sizes in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.
The Olympian’s website is at www.theolympian.com.
“That’s a team effort,” said Lee Liu, The Olympian’s assistant managing editor, interactive.
He credited the newspaper’s reporters, who provide breaking news and write the site’s blogs, and news assistant Tammy McGee, who updates breaking news to the site in the morning.
“Everybody has to contribute,” Liu said. “I’m very surprised, and I’m very proud for The Olympian.”

Matt, what was the point of the following: ... Langer has longer ties to the region. He was born an identical twin in 1955 in Richland. ... Does the fact that he's a twin say anything important about his qualifications for the position?
* Comment on: Repeat DUI offender held without bail in Vermont at 5/17/2010 1:04 PM PDT on The Olympian
Shouldn't the Olympian be writing about the many multiple DUI offenders to be found in our own city/county/state? You don't need to look clear across the U.S. for one to write about!

* Comment on: Letters to the Editor for April 4 at 4/4/2010 3:23 AM PDT on The Olympian

* Comment on: Wind and rot conspire at 4/3/2010 2:29 PM PDT on The Olympian
Olympian, where IS this house? This is lousy reporting-- "Hurley House" is not enough to tell readers where the location is!

There is no need to belabor this further, but I suggest that the Olympian staffers should not let their heads swell after receipt of this award!

Years ago, as a young newspapers manager, I was "visited" by the local looney lawyer in Auburn, WA (who I later found to be brilliant)
Alva Long noted the awards on my wall and asked "what is that shit?" I responded "Washington Newspaper Publisher Awards"
Alva responded, "oh so you get together one day a year and give each other awards then go back to screwing each other for 364 days?"
Oh Anon, don't you know literacy is so 20th century? I think we are fortunate that the whole paper is not one long tweeted text message. Oh shit, now I've gone and done it. Hey LeMasuier, I thought that up first.
