The Olympian wins SPJ award

The Olympian wins SPJ award

The Olympian was the first-place winner for Best Website, General News, in the Society of Professional Journalists Northwest 2009 Excellence in Journalism contest.

Second place in the category went to The Oregonian of Portland, and third place went to The Seattle Times. The Olympian competed against websites of all sizes in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

The Olympian’s website is at www.theolympian.com.

“That’s a team effort,” said Lee Liu, The Olympian’s assistant managing editor, interactive.

He credited the newspaper’s reporters, who provide breaking news and write the site’s blogs, and news assistant Tammy McGee, who updates breaking news to the site in the morning.

“Everybody has to contribute,” Liu said. “I’m very surprised, and I’m very proud for The Olympian.”

Let us consider whether this award is fully deserved, shall we? Following are just some errors noted since the first of April this year.

Olympian, what are inuries?????

* Comment on: Council wasted no time at 5/22/2010 2:40 PM PDT on The Olympian
Matt, what was the point of the following: ... Langer has longer ties to the region. He was born an identical twin in 1955 in Richland. ... Does the fact that he's a twin say anything important about his qualifications for the position?

* Comment on: Repeat DUI offender held without bail in Vermont at 5/17/2010 1:04 PM PDT on The Olympian
Shouldn't the Olympian be writing about the many multiple DUI offenders to be found in our own city/county/state? You don't need to look clear across the U.S. for one to write about!

* Comment on: FirstEnergy and Allegheny seek merger OK in Pa. at 5/14/2010 3:22 PM PDT on The Olympian
Olympian, can you explain why you think this item in particular would be of interest to residents of Thurston County?

* Comment on: Straightening wind-blown trees takes finesse at 5/13/2010 9:38 PM PDT on The Olympian

"WENCH"??? C'mon, do some proofreading! It's either "winch" or "wrench".

* Comment on: Great Wolf HR manager allegedly made obscene calls at 5/6/2010 6:26 PM PDT on The Olympian
Paulowski, check your wording: the authorities didn't obtain a search warrant FROM the website; the warrant was FOR the website!

* Comment on: Sunday morning fire burns home on Bigelow Street at 5/2/2010 3:22 PM PDT on The Olympian
Olympian, how is it that the Tribune can post this at Published: 05/02/1011:45 am | Updated: 05/02/1011:46 am but you don't get around to it until 02:34 PM? Shouldn't it be the other way around??

* Comment on: Grand Prix: Lacey edition at 5/2/2010 11:08 AM PDT on The Olympian
Olympian, check the sub-head: ... Resources: ‘Green’ autos race highlight of Alernative Energy Fair
Care to tell us what "alernative" means?

* Comment on: Bank rebranding will mean new signs at 4/29/2010 2:43 PM PDT on The Olympian
... The new name comes following Washington Federal’s acquisition of Horizon and First Mutual. ...
That's all well and good, but WHAT IS THE NEW NAME?? This article doesn't say what the NEW name is!

* Comment on: OLYMPIA: Driver licenses changing to protect identifications at 4/29/2010 1:57 PM PDT on The Olympian

* Comment on: Thousands flood downtown Olympia for 16th annual Procession of the Species at 4/24/2010 11:49 PM PDT on The Olympian
Christian Hill, don't you think you should have proofread this before sending it on? ... Hein watched the festivities last year but decided it was time to walk on the wide side ... That should have been WILD side!

* Comment on: Volunteers hit McClane trail for a face lift at 4/22/2010 2:53 AM PDT on The Olympian
Who wrote this headline-- McClane??? Couldn't you copy the correct spelling as used in the story?

* Comment on: Olympia man dies after crashing at Pacific Raceways at 4/6/2010 12:30 PM PDT on The Olympian
Stacey Mulick, did you proofread what you wrote before you pushed the "send" button? If you had, you would have spotted what's wrong with the following: The 62-year-old man had been was doing practice laps on a motorcycle ... Tsk, tsk, tsk.

* Comment on: Letters to the Editor for April 4 at 4/4/2010 3:23 AM PDT on The Olympian
I see 13 LTEs but only five authors/pairs of authors. What's up with that, Olympian? I hope we'll finally know the names of all the authors when you get around to it.

* Comment on: Wind and rot conspire at 4/3/2010 2:29 PM PDT on The Olympian
Olympian, where IS this house? This is lousy reporting-- "Hurley House" is not enough to tell readers where the location is!

There is no need to belabor this further, but I suggest that the Olympian staffers should not let their heads swell after receipt of this award!

Years ago, as a young newspapers manager, I was "visited" by the local looney lawyer in Auburn, WA (who I later found to be brilliant)

Alva Long noted the awards on my wall and asked "what is that shit?" I responded "Washington Newspaper Publisher Awards"

Alva responded, "oh so you get together one day a year and give each other awards then go back to screwing each other for 364 days?"

Oh Anon, don't you know literacy is so 20th century? I think we are fortunate that the whole paper is not one long tweeted text message. Oh shit, now I've gone and done it. Hey LeMasuier, I thought that up first.
