Where to donate children's jackets/coats

I managed to capture the sequence of messages started by sparkle's post to the LTE comments, Tuesday, January 12th. Because that day's comments were deleted by the O, I have been asked to post them here to preserve the very helpful information that was posted in response to sparkle's request.

I didn't include any of the hateful comments except one from abc at 2:12 pm that also included a suggestion of church programs that will take and distribute clothing (as well as food and furniture).

Also, nothing to do with the subject of where to donate clothing, but OlyKay's comment at 1:13 apparently is what triggered the string of invective from the "K Krowd" and the O's subsequent deletion of the comments in response.

Off topic but, I have a few warm children's jackets, slightly used, I'd like to donate them to an organization that will get them DIRECTLY to children in need, maybe homeless, at no cost to the recipient. (Not Goodwill, they sell the donations)

Any suggestions???

sparkle, many schools have programs to provide outerwear for their needy students. Check with the administrative offices in the schools in your neighborhood. If they don't have such programs, maybe they'll know which schools do.

sparkle, this is an important resource:

Olympia School District Education Foundation
through its Principal's Emergency Checkbook Fund
Telephone 753-8853
Website www.osdef.org
Email bsperry@osd.wednet.edu

The contact information was good on 10/09/09 when I last made a donation.

It funds resources for principals (teacher's too, of course) who come in first-hand contact with children with needs not otherwise met, including for children who need warm coats. It is an IRS 501(c)(3) charity, so a donation is tax deductible, if you want to keep track.

I've always written a check, so I don't know about donations of goods, but they should know where to send you.

When I was growing up, any coats, scarves, mittens, etc. of mine I didn't use (even for a while) would disappear because my mom would take them for her students who were cold.

sparkle, I forgot to say that your wanting to do something for the children who need warm coats is so inspiring, with so many on here so unwilling to do anything for anyone else.

That is how it gets done around here-nice communication ladies. I can use the info too. Now that AGW has been debunked, we will need those coats and mittens (sarcasm)!

I know my kids' school does a jacket drive each year, but I am not sure what they do with them. The Oly School district would know.

Sparkle, I know for half the people posting here that church and relegion are about the worst things around and are hot beds of hate, anger and prejudice but most large churches have very well established programs that help people in need with alot of things incuding furniture, food and clothing.

abc, I know there is a small Adventist community center up on the east side (Puget) that provides clothing, bedding, & perishables free of cost to families (and homeless) in need that come in and "shop." I know, because I donate to them on a fairly regular basis. They also do quilting projects.

Oh, and it is run by real nice ladies (volunteers) in the church, not paid personnel. They have limited space & I believe only open on Tuesdays. ???

Big Brothers Big Sisters - 360-943-0409 has a program serving children in foster care. Often times, those kids could use that kind of help.

98507, Thank for the reprint. I failed to write down all the good suggestions, since who knew it would get pulled yesterday.

Thanks everyone for your input.

You're welcome. I try to keep up with the comments in case they get pulled, but sometimes I get sidetracked (such as this afternoon when I had to take care of "life" for a couple of hours).

in the list, even though it doesn't direct to a single source.

Now...all this bullshit from Sondra about "passive/aggressive" and somehow she passed on this comment, which is about as P/A as they get.

"Half the people here"???? I'm probably the most vocally opposed to religion and yet, it's not the philanthropical side of churches that bothers me. It's the dogmatic side.

I'll just finish this by saying that when you donate to a secular organization, there are no strings attached in terms of who or why they help.

Yeah, sparkle, you would think that by now I would have figured out how to whip life into shape and keep it there! LOL

Now, Larry, you know that SK isn't going to attack one of the Krowd! After all, she wouldn't want one of them to turn on her!
