One of the socks has decided to elect herself as the comments monitor....

The quality of the exchanges, the majority of which are far off topic, prove my contention. The solution is to find another place to socialize and respect the real intent of this site.Gee, after all this time, merry still doesn't know how it works. It never has been a case of "never got a word in", merry. You and someone else can post a comment at just about the same time, but the Pluck system accepts and posts both of them, giving preference to the one that got there a fraction of a second ahead. The point is that both comments are posted! So don't give us that crap about not getting a word in..... however, I guess it might make you feel better to have an excuse for not holding up your end of the Socks' tent.....merry repeated herself on 01/11/2010 01:23:07 AM:The people who gather here routinely for hours know that they are doing something that is not right. By posting this comment both here today and previously on yesterday's LTE comments, you are just as off-topic as those you complain about. In addition, your so-called exchange equally lacks quality, whatever that means to you. [Now, it's time for you to head back to the sock drawer.]

"Letters to the Editor" has become a place where people hang out to basically socialize. It has little to do as commentary on the letters. I suggest The Olympian restrict the number of comment to a reasonable number of say ten. This should allow everyone to have adequate expression of their opinion on the topic.
I also suggest The Olympian separate each letter to the editor into separate comment sections. This will help focus input and disperse those who are desperate for love in all the wrong places.
The 1000 word restriction was a good idea. But other improvements are necessary to foster legitimate expression and opportunity for all in the community.
