In California I worked with emotionally disturbed students. Best student I ever had was for a time illegal until her grandparents were able to adopt her. She graduated from High school and then college and now is a teacher. Guess how proud I am of her, but she did the deal. I have another former student, also illegal, who is on death row. Not so proud of him. This special girl is not one comes around often. Sadly so many of the offspring of illegals are like the second student. I got into the house, washed up, turned the light bulb tight and it came on, and brought a flashlight out. Thick, wet animal dung had been smeared onto the bottom north and west sides of my house. It had also been thrown into air vents. I waited till that morning and spent a couple hours cleaning it off. Later someone told me residents thought I was pet-trapping their cats and dogs that wandered off lease and against rules and laws around the trailer park and crapped everywhere and caused damage. No, I didn't and don't have the money or authority to trap anyone's animals. Should I have filed a hate crime? Religious groups are not allowed to utilize some facilities or apply for grants that non-religious groups have access to. If a student in a public school attempts to practice their religion (praying silently, for instance) where anyone else can see they are forbidden to continue or told they must hide away.Read more: http://www.theolympian.com/2010/06/26/1285576/letters-to-the-editor-for-june.html?commentSort=TimeStampAscending&pageNum=5&&&&mi_pluck_action=page_nav#Comments_Container#ixzz0rzD61Ijx

I suppose it was just a matter of time before someone brought up the tired, old "kids can't pray in school" argument. However, the facts are that we have at least one high school in this area that has had a Bible Club for years, and the club meets during school hours. Other high schools have leased space to churches to meet and hold Sunday services.

This smells like the "Vietnam vets were spit on when they came home" stories. Maybe it happened somewhere at sometime. Or maybe someone just knows someone who said it happened. But the facts I've presented here can be checked by anyone who wants to verify them for themselves.

Seriously, I went out of my way to make sure I was courteous and followed all the Olympia Policies, as I understand them. Several of my comments were censored. So, I sent an email:

Maybe you can explain in detail how some of my comments are in violation of the guidelines:

To our readers: We welcome comments. Please keep them civil, short and to the point. ALL CAPS, spam, obscene, profane, abusive and off topic comments will be deleted. I'm definitely civil, in fact civil in the face of being treated uncivilly. Short is relative to the subject and not all points can be made in a sentence or two. I have definitely not been obscene, profane or abusive (as I said civil in the face of being treated rather uncivil) and have attempted to assure that my posts are tied into other comments/the content of the editorial matter.

I wish to avoid violating rules, but it appears that, unless there is something other than what I've copied here, I'm at a loss to accommodate your policy as I'm ignorant of some of the content.

    Thank you.

To this courteous correspondence I got no reply. TWICE.

I'm guessing the new plan is to not try to work with people and just be arbitrary....or....the "policy" line is the new "hidden" line and someone is abusing the abuse link again. Until The Olympian communicates with their readers, no one will know.

Blowing off people is not a good policy. It blew up in Aaron Mason's face a few years back when he had such a resentment with me that another "Larry" (pre-pluck days) posted a comment and Aaron gave him the heave-ho within seconds of the post. That "Larry" was a good friend of mine that controls about a $250,000 annual advertising budget. He called Mason and asked why his comment was deleted. Mason, after crapping all over himself, muttered a song and dance about me (using my first and last name) being a "troublemaker" (naughty, naughty, when you are talking to someone's close friend)......etc, etc, etc. Larry and Larry got a good laugh out of the whole thing.

Whereas there are not many local advertising departments anymore, you just never know where a person might end up. Wouldn't it be sort of silly for The Olympian to make the same mistake twice? Sooner or later it can cost you real money.

Bottom line? I want to play by the rules, but I need to know what the rules are.

    How about Louisiana styled politics?

    - A financial disclosure report released Friday shows that the Louisiana judge who struck down the Obama administration's six-month ban on deep-water drilling in the Gulf has sold many of his energy investments. U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman still owns eight energy-related investments, including stock in Exxon Mobil Corp. Among the assets he sold was stock in Transocean, which owned the rig that exploded.

I wonder how much money is being spent in our local media alone, not to mention all over the internet on this campaign. I'm laughing about the "gay thuggery" and other similar comments, remembering that people who are guilting of violating my privacy on The Olympian forums all claim to be heterosexual.

    Just a thought....

While driving today and listening to talk radio, a thought came to me. If I were Barack Obama, I'd pull a Sarah Palin, except I'd finish my first term, then retire.

The retirement for a President is a nice package and he is a young man with a young family and much to gain in terms of money on the commercial sector.

Let the Republicans try again, since they failed from 2001 to 2009 and haven't changed a thing in their modus operendi since Bush left.

I think the American people need to be slapped in the face again.

    Tolerence in YOUR "Christian community"..

How tolerant are you of gay people, IV????

    Answer..

    Not at all..

Your hatred( and self loathing)..is almost palpable....

You HATE ..(yes, HATE) gay people...(and yourself, apparently)

you have no tolerence for others...

Ignorance is just a lack of knowledge..

Stupidity is having knowledge stuck right in your face..

    ..and refusing to see it...

I call very few people stupid, for I still have faith in humanity..

    But you're just plain stupid..

Do you even realize how many people just laugh at you when you post???

Or how you fail so often with your multiple personae?????( Because we ALL know it's you)..

This is the definition of stupidity

The only myth you have in your life is the one you're living...

That you think a "Christian" should behave as you do..

    ...Now THAT'S a myth...

    Snag this before it disappears

"tolerance and diversity in the Christian community?"There is MUCH tolerance and diversity in the Christian community - but don't expect to find it among those who brag of being politically conservative AND Christian. The two don't go together at all. Followers of Jesus are NOT politically conservative - as Jesus spoke against most of the points political conservatives hold to the highest standards. Conservatives actively work against many of the teachings Jesus held up as ideals of His followers.

As an example, look at the postings of IV/BM. Except for his repeated claims to be one, you will find almost nothing of Christ's teachings in his writings.

Now, first of all, I don't live in Lewis County. 98512 is an Olympia ZIP and I live in the Tumwater School District.

Secondly, the outcome of the 22nd District affects the overall outcome of the Legislature, therefore I support Sam Hunt, as there is presently no Democrat running in my district.

Sen. Franken's speech about the fight against conservative activists packing the Supreme Court

(This is both a video of and the text of the speech so that you don't have to listen to the whole video but of course Franken gives emphasis to certain parts, making it a good piece to listen to.)

Sen. Franken's Speech to the Eighth Annual American Constitution Society National Convention
    Thursday, Jun 17

    Some quotes from the speech:

    * Conservative activists – led by the Federalist Society – have waged a remarkably successful battle to re-shape our legal discourse, and thus our legal system.

    * Justice Souter once said: “The first lesson, simple as it is, is that whatever court we’re in, whatever we are doing, at the end of our task some human being is going to be affected.” Conservatives would like us to forget this lesson. They’ve distorted our constitutional discourse to make it sound like the Court’s rulings don’t matter to ordinary people, but only to the undeserving riff-raff at the margins of society.

    * By defining the terms of constitutional debate such that it doesn’t involve the lives of ordinary people, conservatives have disconnected Americans from their legal system. And that leaves room for lots of shenanigans.

    * And, indeed, the Roberts Court has overturned two principles I believe are deeply ingrained in our Constitution, in our legal tradition, and in our American values. First: Judicial restraint. ... Second, and more importantly: They’ve overturned the principle that the law should be a place where ordinary people can turn for relief when wronged by the powerful. ...

    * But there’s more than one kind of power. ... And in case after case after case, the Roberts Court has put not just a thumb, but a fist, on the scale in favor of those corporations. ... What conservative legal activists are really interested in is this question: What individual rights are so basic and so important that they should be protected above a corporation’s right to profit? And their preferred answer is: None of them. Zero. ...

    * The Roberts Court has systematically dismantled the legal protections that help ordinary people find justice when wronged by the economically powerful. ... But even as it has closed the door on ordinary Americans looking for justice in the legal system, this Court has made it harder for the political system to address these injustices. ...

    * Bummed out yet? Well, we’re finally in a good position to fight back. It took the conservative legal movement decades to produce this activist Supreme Court. We’re still in our first decade. But already the American Constitution Society has established itself as a major force in our legal system. And while we often continue to struggle to get our nominees confirmed and our message heard, we have a President who understands that our legal system is broken when it favors the powerful over the powerless, and I know for a fact that I’m not the only Senator ready to take action. So let’s talk about what we can do. Right now, I’m co-sponsoring legislation called the DISCLOSE Act that would force the heads of corporate-sponsored advocacy groups to appear in their ads, require corporations to tell their shareholders what they’re spending political dollars on, prohibit corporations from who receive taxpayer dollars from telling taxpayers how to vote, and keep foreign-controlled corporations out of our elections. ...

    * For instance, I’m very concerned about media consolidation. If we care about public debate, then it matters who runs our media companies. The trend is towards vertical integration of the companies who produce the programs Americans rely on for information, and the companies who run the pipes through which Americans receive those programs. Executives at both Comcast and NBC Universal swear that they’re not interested in corporate control of programming. I used to work at NBC; I know better. And I’m very worried about this merger. We should also be very worried about efforts to undermine the free flow of information on the Internet. ... If you control the flow of information, you can control the conversation around important issues. If you can control the conversation, you can change this country. ...

    * I’m here tonight because, for the people I represent in Minnesota and for regular working people all over the country, that truth is at the heart of their struggle, too. Their struggle to earn a fair wage at a job that treats them well. Their struggle to live their lives free of corporate intrusions into their privacy. Their struggle to breathe clean air and drink clean water. Their struggle to find justice when they’re wronged. I know how important it is that our legal system support individuals in that struggle. And so do you. But most people don’t. And we have to change that. ...
