Our local bigots have a new fanatic to emulate

"COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina lawmaker on Thursday called a Republican gubernatorial candidate of Indian descent a "raghead," saying we have one in the White House, we don't need one in the governor's mansion.

Republican state Sen. Jake Knotts later apologized for the slur, saying the remarks about President Barack Obama and state Rep. Nikki Haley were meant as a joke.

They came on Internet political talk show, Pub Politics. Co-host Phil Bailey said Knotts said, "We've already got a raghead in the White House, we don't need another raghead in the governor's mansion." ..."

When I saw this yesterday, it was a reminder of how big and diverse our country is, and having lived in "middle America", I know there are plenty of folks there who think this way.

My first thought, however, was that it was surprising that someone who's running for office in any state could be so ignorant of how technology has made it so that ANYTHING they say or do can easily become public on a national (or even international) level.

But then I remembered, when you're below the Mason-Dixon Line, lotta people don't see much reason why they should make racism more covert like the folks Up Nawth do. So, the guy says he was just jokin' around, after all, and it's OK.

I call this the downside to diversity.

I'd prefer a "raghead" to an "asshat"
